What month do you apply for residency?

I'm an IMG, so these things aren't really laid out for us. I've heard that Sept 1 is when apps are dloaded by PDs, but is this considered an absolute deadline for most applicants? Some people say to have everything in to ERAS by Sept 1, while others have told me that even as late as mid October is OK. Any thoughts/advice?
