I want to wait to take the DAT in the summer and am thinking to take it in July, is that early? Or should I shoot for more of Juneish?

Sooner the better, but you also want to be ready for it. Also remember that it takes A LOT of time for ADEA to send out your score to AADSAS and the schools. One of my schools didn't even get it apparantly. *Lesson for later: call and make sure your schools have your DAT score. Might help you get in.

early = may 15?

I also vote asap.

If you want or insist on going by a deadline. I'll give you a artificial deadline. Get your application sent by July 1st. That is your essay, transcripts, and other sections of your application. You should have asked your recommenders by then to write a LOR.

July 1st is too late for someone who has average numbers. Not saying you do, just a general rule.

I would be sure that by the end April AT THE LATEST you have asked you profs for letters.

Another way you can save a TON of time is to get a copy of your transcript. You can then retype it all in Word EXACTLY the way it appears on your transcript. Then on May 15st, you'll only have to cut and paste the coursework section. This saves alot of time. My friend did it and he was able to submit that day.

Very clever idea indeed. However, dont equate applying to dental school with say registering for a popular college course. its not like you have to set your alarm clock at 6am on may 15th and submit within the hour in order to secure a spot. make sure you thoroughly proofread your application before you submit, and its always helpful to have someone else take a look at it to make sure you arent looking over any errors.

Honestly i think if you submit anytime before like the second week of june, you wont be hurt.

I agree. You just need to do everything possible to ensure that you are in the first batch aadsas delivers to the schools. To be in that first batch, you'll need your stuff in early so that your transcripts and GPA can be verified. First mailing is usually end of June. Transcript verification takes about 2 weeks. So you like you said, if EVERYTHING is in by around June 10th-15th, you should be ok.

I can help.

The biggest pain in the a55 section to complete on the aadsas application is the completed courses section. In this particular section you are required to transpose every single course taken at a university semester by semester. Youll need to input course name, catalog number, credit hours, grade, and whether or not its a science/bcp course and upper or lower division course. Its very time consuming esp for me since I took 160+ hours and went to three diff universities. Lopyswine suggested to go ahead and input all this info on a text file so when the time comes to apply you'll just simply cut and paste. In fact, its a pretty good idea if you are just itching to get ahead.

What if our school does not send out our LOR's and committee letter until late August, but the application was submitted before June 1st? Are we still considered the first batch because if not my school is screwing me over since they refuse to send it earlier.

Forget about itching to get ahead, I am going to do it this way just so I don't have to spend so many hours dealing with the, ahem, "less than user friendly", AADSAS website. 🙂

You know what I was in the exact situation as you. Luckily most of the schools I applied to had previously dealt with my school (I go to my major state school). so it wasnt an much of an issue since they knew when to expect my comm LOR and thus granted me an interviewed w/o it. If you go to a less known school, then it may pose a problem. The most important thing you need to do is call and speak with admissions staff and let them know your situation. If they dont budge, you may want to have three faculty members on hand so you can submit those LOR in lieu of the comm letter.

July 1st is a deadline that a suggest obviously he has to get the stuff in way earlier then that. I think it will not make that much of a difference if sent between midjune and late june.

thx for replies guys, my application is all set besides DAT and my personal letter. My gpa is like a 3.35 so can i still send in everything minus my DAT scores?

Sure. Th application will take the longest to process. While it is being processed by AADSAS you can take the DAT. The DAT gets send directly to the schools that you designate so it will take about 2 -3 weeks.

Hey guys,

If I were to send out my app. in May and take the DAT the end of July, would that still be early enough?

Is taking the DAT in August too late?

ok so this is what is listed on my transcript:

Term Degr/Yr Course # Sect Description % Ltr Crdt
2007W BSC 4 BIOL 425 201 BIOMECHANICS 82 A- 3.0

Would I put that info down, or do I have to type out the entire course description?:

"BIOL 425 (3) Biomechanics An analytical approach to the study of skeletal mechanics and animal locomotion. Selected topics in the structure and properties of biological materials, the functional design of skeletons for locomotion, and the fluid mechanics of swimming and flight." (as found in my school's calendar)

Usually it is not too late if the AA score is in the top 5% and the gpa is ~3.5+.

I took the DAT on July 24th and was accepted into every school that I applied to.

Just remember that the DAT and GPA are the two most important parts of your application. Don't screw the DAT up just to be "early" because some pre-dents on this site make too big of a deal out of it.

I did fine on the DAT but probably would have had a better score if I had pushed it back a few more weeks instead of being in a hurry to apply early.

All you need to put down is the course name and number, the letter grade, how many hours/credits, and what type of course it is (biology/physics/etc) if I remember correctly. For those of you who haven't yet converted your number score into a letter grade, do it now; it'll save you A LOT of time.

Also, you list your classes per semester/quarter so before you start listing your classes, you have, for example, "winter 2007." Then underneath that, you'll list each course for that semester/quarter with all the additional info. Hope that makes sense.

I did exactly that... submitted in May, took the DAT July 31st. I didn't do well on the DAT so I thought my chances were done for. I did get into a couple of schools and am sitting on a waitilist, however. Good luck!
