I was wondering what type of stuff are we 'allowed' to ask without seeming too nosey or rude. Also, what type of stuff shoud we NOT ask absolutely.

You can ask any question that you need that will help you make the most informed decision that you can about the program. This being said, I would ask the resident's about working hours/conditions,housing (not the program director) and I would ask the program director about things that pertain to the accreditation status of the program, the percentage of graduates that pass Boards (written and oral) on the first try, ABSITE score expectations, criteria for promotion, required research, didactics, etc.

Since you are going to spend a minimum of five years of you life in a program, you NEED to know as much as possible. IMHO, no question is off limits but some are better directed at the PD/faculty and some are better directed at residents.

I agree with njbmd - I can't think of any questions that would be off-limits (unless they were of course, personal in nature - ie, my weight, sexual habits, etc. 😉 ).

If a program is offended and think you too nosy, then perhaps they are either
a: hiding something (it has always been my feeling that those who get angry when you question them are hiding something...NB: hope ex-boyfriend sees this)

or b: not the program for you.
