I heard some schools recommend not using macs since students should

be using programs that only run on windows

of course not like there will be anymore acceptances till Jan, right!

There's multiple ways to run Windows on a Mac (Bootcamp, Parallels and other programs), so that shouldn't be an issue.

I will probably get an Asus. Core 2 Duo and dedicated graphics.

I was looking at tablet notebooks. It'll be nice not having any notebooks. Anyone have any experiences with them? Good/bad idea?

I've been using an ASUS Eee Netbook (HE 1000), and I LOVE IT. 6 hour battery life too.

Also, i exclusively use Microsoft OneNote to take notes in class. it does everything (including easy drawing of figures n such) and i will most definitely be using it in dental school.

i highly recommend both.

UCLA requires you to buy a new laptop (Lenovo or Dell) as part of their standardized laptop program. Thus, I was under the false impression that most d schools had laptop programs like these. Apparently, though, from this discussion, I see that most schools are impartial to what kind of laptop we use. Is that right?

MacBook Pros at Buffalo. Best computer I've ever owned and I swore I'd never be a Mac person...worth every penny...(MacBook Pros are required at UB SDM)

You have to get a computer through the school at MWU; Most went with the macbook, I chose a Dell Latitude E6400, and the other choice was a Sony (the Sonys have had the most issues so far). The price and warranty was the same no matter what choice you made.

I got a toshiba tablet PC my freshman year of undergrad and that was the worst computer I have ever owned period. Writing on it is nothing like pen and paper. For the same amount of money you can get a way better non-tablet computer. I now have a new macbook pro and it is probably the best computer I have ever owned. I was also never a Mac believer.

On the other hand, a lot of schools require you to buy a laptop that they choose for you, so I would double check before buying one. Unfortunately I may have to go back to PC because of this. At least it will have windows 7 and not be a tablet though.

ps. IMO Netbooks are not powerful enough to be your main computer, but would be pretty handy for going to class/taking notes if your other computer is a bit clunky.

I do not like toshiba too its a big rip off. in 2k5 I paid ~1800 w/ 4 years of guarantee... my LCD broke after a year... and what did they do REPLACE IT W/ CHEAP LCD... it looks like crap... right after buying it liek `~1.6 years later it started to have overheating problems. Computer shuts off automatically... too many problems... I believe acer has this problem too...

I recommend windows laptop due to many reasons... for ex. lets say your harddrive breaks or you want to expand memory you can easily do it unlike mac where you need to spend a lot and you get very little. And almost all the programs that might be useful for dental school students are guaranteed to work on windows.

WINDOWS 4 LIFE.

It seems like 90% of people at Tufts (at least the ones that bring them to class) have Macs. Just an observation.

You can just as easily expand the memory on Macs just as easy as PC computers (at least it is for the macbook pro). Although, you are right about the hard drive.

With that said, if I have to buy a laptop through the school and it's the same price - I would go with mac. The dental students at MWU (where I'm currently a masters student) mostly have Macs and they run their dental programs just fine. However, if they were being sold at retail price then I would go with PC. IMO, Mac's are better than PC's but way overpriced comparatively. I have a Mac right now and love it but my next laptop (if I'm buying retail) will definitely be a PC.

👍👍 I said the same thing. Best computer I have ever had

Gateway 🙂 with windows 7!

lol..... Have you ever even used a mac? Or have you ever been in a situation where you had to replace the hard drive or memory? I'm not very computer savvy, and I have replaced both the memory and hard drive (by choice) in my macbook and it was SIMPLE.

I never thought that I would be a mac person either, but because of years of dealing with unreliable windows-based computers (I have had an HP, Dell, and Micron in the past)-- I can say that I will never own one again. Macs are incredibly reliable and easy to use. Sure, there are some things that are annoying (i.e. attempting to open windows-based programs when you don't have parallels or whatever), but you get used to it.

My mac is 4 years old and still running like a bad ass.

im considering buying a macbook pro at the student price of 1100 for first year of dental school. I own a dell lattitude and I'm not so pleased with its performance and especially durability over the last four years. The speakers died in 1 year, the keys have fallen off on occasion, windows 7 hates me and ive gone through 3 batteries already. I'm pretty much ready to try something more reliable. Its not that I can't handle the difficulty of windows, its just that 2 of my roommates just got macbook pros and they love them. I dont mind the price, b/c I put a price on my frustrations with hardware and virus infections 😡
do dental schools offer huge discounts?

This one...

DividedByZero,

You can easily replace any part on a Mac, including the display or the entire logic board without difficulty. There is a web site called ifixit.com which provides free, step-by-step, full-color photographs for every conceivable repair that you'd ever need to do for any model Apple computer made within the last 10 years. They also sell all the replacement parts and upgrades, though you may be able to find them cheaper on eBay.

A hard drive upgrade is no big deal, and shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes max once you get started. In fact, here is a link to the instructions for replacing or upgrading the hard drive on a 13" MacBook Pro Unibody.
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/...13-Inch-Unibody-Hard-Drive-Replacement/1337/1

By the way, ifixit.com was recommended to me by the guy working at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. I needed to upgrade a part on my 6 year old PowerBook, and he told me I could do it faster and cheaper this way.

Yeah, 2k and you have to buy it through the school.

ouch thats a nice high end computer right there for that price! Imac 27in/macbook pro loaded. 😱

Ok compare with all these macs people are throwing around mine's pretty low on the radar. i just bought an acer aspire. main reason was that it was really cheap! the other one that I got three years ago treated me well so I figured I'd give it another go around.

besides the fact that I prefer taking notes by hand anyway. five star all the way
