Hey...so I'm a 4th yr MD US allopathic student. Submitted my app yesterday 9/8. 225 step I, taking step 2 Oct, mostly H 1/2nd year, mostly HP 3rd yr.

Looking for a program with GOOD didactics, relatively chill schedule (6 to 3-5 most days, q6-7). Don't care about area...in fact I like smaller cities. It's nice not to have ~40% of your salary after taxes go towards rent! (I'm not joking....that's how it is for some residents at my home prog!!!)

Don't really care about rep that much....just enough so that I can get a fellowship (peds/cards/pain) somewhere. That's why I haven't really applied to the Big guys (MGH/Hopkins/Yale/BWH/UCSF).

I am leaning towards UCONN, DREXEL, Mercy Pittsburgh, UMASS, Baystate. Also UT galveston, but it seems like they are mad competitive.

I applied to the following gas progs.....what additional progs should I add?

Yo IV:
I'm an MS4 as well, I put my app in on 9/3, and I applied to many of the same programs as you; Step I 245, Step II 258. My only advice is that you shouldn't restrict the programs you apply to, you SHOULD shoot for some of the top programs (Wash U, UCSF, Duke, Yale, Mass Gen, etc.) so long as they are in areas that you wouldn't mind living in. From my research, these programs accept many different types of candidates and your scores are great. I applied to the top programs just for kicks, I really am hoping for a Florida program or AZ. Most programs have similar schedules, call q6-7, out by 4-6 PM on non-call days. You do want those programs that have good didactic schedules, and those that are gonna give you the most regional anesthesia exposure as this will continue to become more of a standard of care.

this is a bit down the road for me. how do you go about asking programs while on the trail about their regional training. it seems that programs would be reluctant to say "Our regional training is terrible." So basically, what kinds of questions are you asking; what tell-tail signs are you looking for: etc? I realize that i may kick myself in the a$$ for asking this question after i gain some more anes. experience, but what the heck!

Always make an effort to speak with the residents about the program. Find a candid one and twist his nipples for the inside dirt.

So where do you find this info?
Also any suggestions of places to apply (I want to go to NYC or Seattle or some nice city like that)? (Got low 200s on Step I, took Step II late august, waiting for the results to come back, hopefully much better than step I; MS in genetics; clinical grades 1/2 p, 1/2 H+HP)

Venty,
So hows residency going? Are ya kinda settling in? Is the initial deer-in-the-headlights-feeling gone? Have you done a case by yourself yet?

If you're gonna go to Cleveland, might as well apply to the Case Western - University Hospitals Program. They didnt fill last year because they were way too selective on the ranking. However it's a great program with lotsa perks (moonlighting, etc...) Good luck!

Just for your info, the cities with the highest cost of living as of 2005 are:

1. Boston(yes, Boston)
2. Washington DC
3. NYC
4. SF
5. LA

>50% of your salary will easily go towards rent/utilities in the top 4.

I'm settling in Jet but I still get heavy chested and feel my head tingle at times during cases. I always make it through. There is so much to absorb its incredible. The whole learning by doing thing on a pt who you are functioning as both a physician and a brainstem for is daunting. I love it.

Yeah they turned us loose. Pretty scary. I do NOT miss being a floor monkey. Those poor medicine residents. 🙂

I don't know when that whole stunned fish look will vanish from my inner and outter self but I can't wait till it does. I'm getting there. Like UT said if you just push yourself hard enough to be better than you were the day before you'll be fine. So that's what I've been doing.

ANypoops I'm on vacation now and I welcome it. I was feeling a little crispy there but I'm nervous that I'll suck upon returning to the OR's. Oh well, could be worse. 😉

Bigger question is how are YOU settling in? You still need me to take one of those kids or pets? Either or, don't matter to me.

Glad to hear it, Venty. That tingle you feel at times is good...its good to feel that WHAT THE F%CK DO I DO NOW? feeling while you are a resident and under the protective wing of your attendings. I encourage you to do things that you are uncomfortable with, albeit under watchful supervision. Thats how you learn this business. And the more you go out on a limb as a resident, the more comfortable you'll feel when you come out.

Never done an interscalene but the opportunity arises? GO FOR IT, dude. Its all about repetition. Ya gotta start somewhere. Believe me after you do 100 you could teach your sister how to do it.

And thanks for asking how I'm doing. I'm hangin in there. I'm in $%@#!$@$ia, Louisiana, about 3 hours from my home, hangin' in my rent house with my incessantly active 2 year old. My wife is in New Orleans preparing the contracting orchestra of rebuilding the first story of our house. I'm pondering a fulltime (albeit temporary) position where I'm at...whatever temporary means....6 months? A year? 2 years? Hell, I dont know. Thank God I've got a little jack in the bank and dont have to worry about making ends meet.

When I'm convinced that the duck-on-a-habitrail SDN server will support a long post, I'm gonna post my hurricane experiences, and what I've learned about protecting yourself financially....stuff that no one talks about (because insurance #hit is boring and nobody cares about it) and no insurance agent will tell you...and what traps are present when you have an expensive house, even if you have alotta equity...and what things are covered and what things are not by your insurance (you'll be shocked)....

thank God I think our house will do fine after a couple hundred K of renovation...and my now-leveled Mississippi condo will be rebuilt to a more valuable investment...but believe me there are pitfalls when buying real estate that can erase your net worth in one night. And there are ways to protect yourself.

Stay tuned.

ANd Venty, if I wasnt sure my wife would divorce me, you'd be receiving a UPS box with one 110 lb Great Pyrrenese, One 25 lb psycho pound puppy who is on Prozac (no kidding), one 20 lb pound puppy who looks like Yoda on Star Wars, one 9 lb declawed Persian cat who thinks he even owns the fuc*ing rent house, and one 11 lb declawed pretty cool gray pound cat. Can you tell my wife is actively involved in animal rescue? EVERY animal above is a rescue animal. My house might as well be named BILL'S ANIMAL SHELTER !!!!

ANd I'll keep our one other animal...Lucy...our 9 lb miniature daschund (sic?).

Thats 4 dogs and 2 cats we have, bro. You can have 'em all....except Lucy....and thanks for taking them....but once my wife finds out I gave them away you're gonna have to put me up to!!!!

JPP,

I’m glad to hear you're hanging in there, and that you and your family are safe. I can only imagine what you have been through and the turmoil that must be in your life right now. When you do get your life back in order and have some free time, I would love to read about your experience with Katrina and insurance agents, and any wisdom you have about financial planning.

Thats a Freudian projection if I've ever seen one, what with that pink-Prince Queer Eye For The Straight Guy avatar of yours (that I notice has been removed)...

Again, no homophobe here. But a gerbil collection I have not. I've got an open mind, believe me. But theres something about a guy's hairy #ss that, well, should be left for the XX chromosome people. Why a dude would wanna look at that in this breast augmentation era is beyond me!

Disclaimer: This is a humorous post to make people laugh. Laughter is needed in this biblically catastrophic time.

hey JPP

i know your busy and havent had time to post the manifesto you promised..u know i love that sorta stuff (business, management, etc).

but hey, is there validity to this. I heard that those victims that left have only like 2 mo's or so some time period to reclaim land, or else it can be sold/or claimed by others. kinda scary. is this true? i mean, i figure there's no real 'record' of who owns what since, i'm sure all the computers and papers/files holding land owners rights are gone.. yikes.

btw, JPP did u hear about that louisiana congressman that used the military to go back to his house and retrieve stuff s/p 3 days or somethign after katrina. appears that he is involved in some deep $hit (bribery charges) and had gone into his battered home to retrieve laptops and some suitcases. ppl suspect that those items may have contained incriminating info for his bribery charges. of course this may be a republican spin, but going in after the storm using military (which he states he didnt want) to get ur stuff back....seems a little shady 🙄
