What other grad schools are you applying to?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any advice on how to answer this question I keep encountering on apps would be much appreciated.

It's not a trick question; just give them the honest answer. They know that (usually) their school is not the only one you are applying to.

I don't feel like they'd ask the question unless they were digging for something. If I have the option of not answering the question, should I leave it blank?

I'm guessing they are looking to see what characteristics you are looking for in a school and if the other schools you are applying to match up to such characteristics - and not that you are applying to their school for an undesirable reasons

and yes, you should answer the question

IMO, answer the question. I don't know what they could possibly be "digging for". I would actually assume they ask it more for statistical reasons, seeing what other schools they are competing with in terms of drawing in strong applicants.
