After watching the movie I realized the parallels of being a pharmacist to the movie Parasite. At the beginning I got accepted to Pharmacy and I thought I would escape the slums and be among the rich. However this was just a lie. After many years, I realized the student loans and hard retail environment has not really done anything special for me. I am stuck making huge student loan payments and working away my life with little to no enjoyment at high stress levels. The final scene where Mr Kim strikes down Mr Park is how I feel about Walgreens. Yes they employ me but they think I am a dog and work me to death and have no respect for me or even see me as a human. I would rather strike down Walgreens and return to where I was from the beginning. Pharmacy ruined my life.

You’re not the only pharmacist that feels like that. “Pharmacy ruined my life.”

Pharmacists have a direct parallel to the movie Parasite in that they are simply a leech to society (as an added cost to healthcare system), yet society "needs" them because SOMEONE needs to dispense meds to patients. Can't wait to see the sequel- Parasite 2: Age of Automation.

Aren't you the guy whose parents paid off his tution and has been a pharmacist for 15 years making 200k a year in Kaiser just product checking and then working part time at an independent pharmacy watching tv and listening to podcasts all day?

I smell a troll.

They were probably talking about the situations of ppl who graduated the last 5-10 years.
But I agree. Those situations are still better than NOW.
My classmates and I are begging to be chains' slaves. Unfortunately, no luck yet !

That's the plot?

That's the funny thing with kids these days going into this profession.

I went into this profession just to have a decent job and I ended up among the top 10%.

Lesson? Don't chase money, do something you will enjoy.

you are basically like mr Kim at the beginning. You want to be employed by mr park(aka Walgreens). I am pharmacist you get fired so you can take my job ( the driver and maid) But in the end, board of pharmacy exposes you(aka the husband in the basement). You lose your marbles and realize you had enough of this BS just to earn a few beans and take down Walgreens. Similar to how mr Kim decides to take out mr park.

I don't think the kids going to pharmacy now are chasing money. They just want to have a job, a career. Pharmacy is so easy to get in. So they can do it.
My classmates are willing to work at interns' salary, $18/h, forever and have a debt of 200K.

It was interesting to see hollywood actors cheer for the very movie that mocks them. I haven't seen the movie but from what I gather, it's basically how Korean people feel about their lives. I guess we aren't far removed from that either.

I just spoke to a former professor and she said she feels bad about what's been happening in the pharmacy and that people are blaming people like her for this when she had no control over it. The ultra saturated market, new schools popping up everywhere, pharmacy work environment sucking more and more by the day.... I'm happy being where I am but still worried that there is no secured future in this profession...

Tbh, I worked at Walgreens as an intern and had 3 appe rotations with CVS. I wonder if I have enough energy to work at these chains longer than 6 months.
Fortunately I have backup so I can quit when I want to.

This movie is also giving me an idea on how to avoid my student loans. I can be like the maid’s husband. I can live in my parents basement and they wouldn’t know I am there. I can sneak up when I’m hungry until the student loan collectors forget I existed.

You don't believe pharmacy students are desperate, do you? Do you think ALL of them will finally find a $45/h job?

Interns are let go if chains don't hire them as grad interns by 5/31.
Most of them asked the chains to let them stay with that wage. Of course they didn't.

90 some percent of people entering this profession are doing it for the money.

This is not new info.

You should see the movie because its not about hollywood actors nor is it specifically about korean life.

People entering any profession, doctor, dentist, pharmacist, nurse, ... are doing it for money. Of all those 4, pharmacy is the easiest (to learn, to work, to teach...) So of course ppl pick the easiest.

I think that is an over stretch to conclude as such. But automation specially AI will definitely change the course of the profession as is expected for so many other professions.

They do 95% the same thing as techs but get paid 4-5x more. Huge burden on society. It's like having the fat kid on your track team - no matter how fast the rest of you run, he's going to drag down the average.
Yes, I agree.
The fair wage should be somewhere around $30/h. With this wage I'm sure tuition can't be 200K.

I think salaries for pharmacists will follow a bimodal distribution in the future. Either you're making $150k+ as a clinical specialist after doing a PGY-5 or you're making $25-30/hr as a "retail" pharmacist or whatever it evolves into. But once $25/hr becomes mainstream, this will no doubt impact the salaries of faculty as well because schools will be forced to reduce tuition prices to attract more students.

Pgy-5 ???
Lmao

You're the one that gets up every morning and drives your ass to work.
Have some guts or ambition and do something about it.

Nobody makes you work for them.

If you make six figures and are still poor, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Judging from your previous posts, you are likely an obsequious trash pharmacist that is lucky to get the money Walgreens gives you.

If this discussion was a Mortal Combat match, the above post would end with:

FINISH HIM!

Law has the bi-modal distribution (Big Law vs not) and manages to charge $50k/yr tuition still
The difference between law and pharmacy is that lawyer jobs will always be there despite the saturation while pharmacist jobs are being eliminated on top of the saturation issue. Additionally, law school enrollment has actually increased the last 2 years by a total of 11% so kids are still wanting to go into law and since the demand is there, schools can charge whatever. Now contrast that to pharmacy where the number of applications have dropped from 15,000 2 years ago to 13,000 last year to about 9,000 this year from what I've been hearing, and schools are literally BEGGING anyone to become a pharmacist.

9000 ???
Really???
I'm glad to hear if that is true.
Thank god, 6000 are saved!

I guess we'll need to wait and see when PharmCAS releases their official stats towards the end of this year but if everyone and their moms can hear about how great pharmacy is, then you can be sure the saturation news is gonna spread like wildfire as well. Quite frankly I think over half of the C/O 2019 is still unemployed so prospective students are probably looking at that and deciding to do something else with their career.

At least you dont have "pharmacy midlevels" encroaching on your territory.

Why are you so negative?

I'm very curious and I don't mean about this profession but in general you seem like a very negative person.

It's like you want people to struggle.

Those are financial illiterate people, because of the amount of debt that one acquires. If you want to do something for money, become a Certified Financial Consultant and look at people’s stocks all day. Or an investment banker. Heck, manage a gas station or a motel. They make more than a physician with less schooling and zero debt

Sadly true. Although we were meant more much more, current pharmacy system has turned us into gloried techs.

Like I've always said, this wasn't suppose to be a profession to make everyone rich.

Based on inflation from the 90s, we should be making about $90k right now which is about $43/hour.

Do I exclusively post in the pharmacy forum and not the pre-pharm forums? I think not.

If anything, you're the one making direct attacks on people half the time.

There's no doubting that but immediately when I see your account, I already know it's going to be attacking our profession.

I just don't get why people want to live in negativity.

Also I mainly post in the investment thread or political threads since the rest of this forum is just complaining.

There wasn't medicare part D until Jan 1, 2006 nor chain pharmacy expansion and consolidation.

Right, what I meant was when we fall back to $40/hour being the norm it just means we are being paid our inflationary rate instead of a supply/demand rate.

Yet the productivity expectations are much different compared to the 90s
