As I understand it, the score given to students for part I of the dental boards is not a percentage grade, but a grade that is translated from a raw score. I also understand that a score of 90 is critical in most cases for gaining acceptance into many graduate programs. Therefore, I was curious about what percentage of test takers in a given year actually score a 90 or above.

Hey Kong,
Here is an approximate scoring breakdown of the exam...
(99) – 0.7%
(96-98) – 2.2%
(93-95) – 5.9%
(90-92) – 12.1%
(87-89) – 18.5%
(84-86) – 21.2%
(81-83) – 18.5%
(78-80) – 12.1%
(75-77) – 5.9%
(Failing) - 2.9%

About 20% of students score 90 or above.

wow that seems higher than what I thought! is this current? where did you find this valuable information? thanks! 🙂

I never got a percentile...and I was told that since the exam is going pass/fail the stats from this years exam will most likely not be released.

what I wrote in my previous post is definitely on the back of her score report from august 09.... things could have changed though.

Is it really the NBDE now PASS/FAIL ,if you pass that is it you do not do it again?
is this something beneficial to students or makes things more struggling ?

I believe the NBDE will adopt a pass/fail system in 2012. Since most students go into general practice anyway I don't see how it will things more difficult.

Difficult for postgrad admission . especially for foreign trained dentists who have not done NBDE.

Now I believe for U.S graduates NBDE kind of requirement to get a licence to practice.
