Hi all. was wondering how people who took the boards studied for the pharm. is first aid enough? or would it be good to buy a set of flash cards, and if so which ones? the problem is that im not sure which drugs im supposed to know....the brenner pharm cards i bought have a lot of drugs, and im too lazy to learn all of them

also do we need to know interactions among drugs?

thanks

Lange Pharm Cards were my favorites. Not too dense, easy to learn. Go through it with a friend and randomly pick cards out of the deck and quiz each other. For example...this antipsychotic can cause agranulocytosis. Bam.

Here's a list of important drugs to know. Obviously not a complete list but a good start.

- Penicillin
- Nafcillin
- ampicillin
- Unasyn
- Augmentin
- Zosyn
- Timentin
- Cephalosporins (first, second, third)
- Aztrenam
- Meropenem/Imipenem
- Bactrim
- Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin
- Gentamicin, Tobramycin, Amikacin
- Erythromycin
- Vancomycin
- Linezolid
- Tetracycline
- Chloramphenicol
- Clindamycin
- Metronidazole
- Amphotericin
- Fluconazole
- Ketoconazole
- Isoniazid
- Rifampin
- Pyrazinamide
- Ethambutol
- Acyclovir
- Ganciclovir

Drugs effective against enterococcus
Drugs effective against pseudomonas
Drugs effective against streptococcus and staphylococcus

Good luck.

I also love the Lange Flashcards and there are a couple of good Pharm review books out there too. Although I am mainly using for MS2 -- not sure what I will use for Board Prep time.

First aid is good enough. You only need to know a few drug-drug interactions that you probably already know, like a SSRI + MAO inhib is not a good idea....Don't give someone viagra and nitro. Basic stuff like that. I had like 5 pharm questions on my usmle.

I'm using Katzung's Review, and I love it so far. It keeps things basic, goes over the basic physiology before going into the path, and has charts at the end of every chapter to go over the salient points again.

Anybody else have the issue of UW questions asking on things that aren't in Katzung's? I've been using that thing as my bible, but I keep running across drugs that it doesn't cover.

Really, if I want to be well covered on pharm, what should I use?

Kaplan pharm videos. I can't recommend them enough. There were only a couple (maybe 4-5) pharm questions on the real test I couldn't answer, and these videos, FA, and qbanks were all I used. Pharm at my school was a mess too.

 My coursework was pretty light on pharm, so I watched all of the Kaplan pharm videos during 2nd year to make up for it. Now, if I get a pharm practice question that I can't answer, it's usually because I forgot what the French guy in the Kaplan lectures told me to remember (since it was almost two years ago that I watched the videos).
