What schools are an absolute no for OOS?

My MCAT isn't until June, so this isn't really a WAMC. Still I'm trying to make a rough school list because I'm really constrained to the 15 covered by FAP.

I just want to know at what ratio in-state bias do we say an absolute waste of time to apply.

Ex. I see non-NC residents getting advised to apply to UNC chapel hill. Yet MSAR shows ~53% in-state offered interviews while ~2.5% out-of-state get interviews. So what bias ratio is not worth it?

I recommend collecting data on all the OOS schools that are in your GPA/MCAT range, and calculate an OOS matriculation rate (i.e. ratio of OOS mats to OOS apps) for each. Start your list with your in-state schools, and fill in the rest with the OOS schools that have the highest OOS matriculation rate, but feel free to replace a couple with reaches that you can't live without applying to.

No need to determine an IS favoritism threshold. Just choose the schools with the best odds.

Thank you. I ended up going through a lot of it and doing just that. Still have anxiety about wasted money though lol

My rule of thumb is if a school accept > 15-20% from OOS, then it's worth a crack, but you need ot be > avg for them. As you're aware, state schools favor the home team.

The following schools should pretty much ignored for those from OOS, especially if you're not in an adjacent state.:

JAB (HI)
U MN
U SD
UND
UMS
LSU
U AB
U SAB
U NC
Brody
U TN
East TN
UCD
UCR
All UTx's
U MA
U NE
U MO
SIU
MCG
Mercer
U SC
OR HS
UWA (only for WWAMII)
U NV
U UT
U MD
U CT
Marshall
U OK
U KS
U AR

Thank you so much for this!!

The 15>20% should go off the matriculated data in MSAR right? Or are there accepted data I'm not aware of?
