I was wondering what dental schools only require a semester of O-Chem with a semester of biochem, instead of a full year of O-Chem ?

Thanks !

Dont wanna be mean but ur post is meaningless, u have to complete one yr of o chem and at least one semester of biochem in order to be competitive in most schools.

ucsf requires one semester ochem and one biochem

uop two ochem OR 1 ochem and 1 biochem

this is all i know off the top of my head, there're ppl that composed exhaustive list of schools with their requirements - but really, you should be researching these important facts through each school's website - all 50 of them. last thing you want to do is take pre-reqs based on what ppl say here.

I did a quick skim through the official guide 2010 and University of Iowa has a blank on O-chem, but it also has a blank on biology, gen chem and physics so I'm guessing it is a mistake. Everybody requires it.

yeah i've looked through most schools websites. I live in Georgia and MCG has the 1 and 1 policy and so does UoP i'm just trying to make a solid list of schools.

You need 2 semesters ochem at almost all schools... not to mention how do You expect to get through ochem on the DAT without having taken both semesters

You should take a full year of ochem, both I and II. No question.

So i went throught just about every dental school site and here is a quick list of the requirements for the schools that require or accept One semester of O-Chem and One Semester of Biochem. Also I am hearing the Medical standardized tests are straying away from O-Chem

Penn Dental:
one year biology (anatomy, MBIO, and physiology are rec)

Semester Biochem

Louisville Dental:
Year Gen
Semester O-Chem

One Physics
Year Biology
rec. anatomy, physiology, CBIO, hitology, MBIO, Immunology

one semester of physics
year of english

i think most ppl would take ochem 1 and 2 followed by one semester gen biochem.

but if you're pressed for time, there is a way around this and still prepare for the dat and fulfill school requirements: take gen ochem instead of series 1+2 ochem, take the dat and apply, then take ochem 2 (or not, depending on your school choices) and gen biochem. the point here being that gen ochem is all you need for the dat and it fulfills requirements, and you can take another sem of ochem if required.

i didn't do this myself, but i think in theory this would work.

Even if you only applied to schools that require org I only, you still need to know org II for the DAT

TAKE BOTH OCHEMS (I and II) , it will be unbelievably helpful to know it for the DAT. A solid year of BIOCHEM also helps soooo much too, trust me (if you want).

Just my two cents

O-Chem is one of those weed out classes. If you cant hack it at taking O-Chem then you will have a hard time hacking it in dental or med school.
Same thing with Physics. Thats why they have you take the science classes, to see if you can put up with it.
Take both semesters of O-Chem, you need it for the DAT.
Dont become a weed.
