I'm an MS1 and see myself going into anesthesiology or EM, but there's a small part of me that feels like I could be interested in a surgical subspecialty, like urology or ortho. I'm trying to find research for the upcoming summer and thinking about doing it in a surgical specialty to keep my options open if I do decide to pursue it. I know anesthesia and em don't really care about research, so are there any negatives to going this route?

A safe but possibly mundane option is doing research that is applicable to all or many of the fields you might be interested in. You could do anesthesia research that focuses on urological surgeries. You could do ortho research that has to do with outcomes after a patient comes into the ED with musculoskeletal trauma.
