Hey all,

I'm not familiar with how this process works. The AADSAS application is not available at the moment so I do not want to tell my referees to write up my LOR right now since I do not know what the actual prompt is for which they have to write about. Is there some sort of form that we have to print out and provide to the referees? And do I have to wait until the application becomes available to do this? I would just like to make sure that I am on top of things for this upcoming cycle. I would really appreciate any further suggestions on what I can do now to prepare for the application! Thanks!

Is a referee a professor? Anyway, you should have already asked them to write letters awhile ago. Your professors will write your letter in Word and save it, so they can write it anytime. You will have the option of having them submit it electronically (preferred, it's faster) or by mail. When the ap opens you type in their information and it will send them an email telling them how to submit, or you print off the form that they can send in the mail with the letter. Ask tomorrow so they have enough time to write it.

I've already asked them. What I'm wondering is. is there some specific prompt that the AADSAS LOR printout has?

No, they just write a letter of recommendation however they see fit to write it. Then submit it to AADSAS when they get the email. They should have written some before so they should know what to do, if not, google how to write a letter of rec and email them the results. You could tell them what to write and then you would get a real good letter!

I gave each a copy of my CV/Resume, and some info about what I'm apply to and why. Most knew me pretty well, but they wanted a complete picture. Ask them if there's anything you can give them to help them write a strong letter. There is no prompt at all. The letter should simply be a character assessment and why the applicant would make a suitable dentist/dental student. One of my profs highlighted my academic abilities and commented on some of my research abilities. Another discussed my outreach activities and how that fit in with being a healthcare professional.

I will not be applying until next year (2014) for 2015. When should I begin asking for LORs? I have a few professors in mind, but since I won't be applying for another year, is it too early to ask? I don't want to be forgotten, but on the other hand, I'm not sure where or how their letters get stored.

Thanks!

You can ask them now and collect them. Your school's advising/pre-health committee might offer a letter collecting service, sometimes at a small fee. Or you can use interfolio. People have said positive things about them.

I would use Interfolio. You can ask now, or just maintain contact until your app time is up. I gave mine about 2.5 months to write the letters. It seemed like a perfect amount of time. Anything longer, and they put it on the backburner and forget until you remind them.
