What should I do this summer?

Hello All,

Unfortunately, I only applied to a few research internships for this summer and they are pretty competitive. Yes, I realize this was stupid, but I didn't know about the whole medical school process a few months ago as much as I do now (thanks in part to this forum!). I am currently a sophomore undergrad student. My long-term goal is to get into the U of M medical school (TC or Duluth). If I don't get an internship for this summer, I plan to do even more volunteering and shadowing. Besides those things, what sort of jobs/ideas do you guys have that will give me some useful experiences in the medical field? I'll be living back at home in Minneapolis this summer, so there are a lot of hospitals and clinics around.

I think that's a solid plan so far. Research involvement is definitely a plus for both your resume as well as your own personal growth. If you can't' nab an internship, look for research options at school during junior year.

Another option for summer is getting involved with a medical service trip. This would only be for a week or so. See if your school has organizations that do these. There are certainly ethical issues surrounding these types of trips, but I found them to be a hit in medical school apps/interviews because many med schools also organize them.

If you plan on taking the MCAT junior year, you may find summer to be a great time to get a head start. It's tougher later on when you have to balance MCAT prep with upper-level classes.

HCMC has a great research associate program that they run in their ED. I don't know if applications are still being accepted for the summer, but it's def worth checking out! I did it for two semesters (not summer) and LOVED it.

I believe there is another hospital that has a similar summer program, but I'm not entirely sure which one. Regions maybe?
