hi,

For those of you who went through Mayo's phone interview (the one used in place of a secondary), What kind of questions did you get? I was briefly talking to one student who did it, and the questions he told me were extraordinarily strange (What do you think about at night....) ... And, i'd prefer not to have huge suprises...
but, i'm also learning to prepare for standard questions, and expect the unexpected. In which case, no interview will suprise you.

If you read the first 5 or so reviews on Mayo in Interview Feedback, they list most of the questions asked. Some of the questions have changed, but those reviews should give you a good idea of what to expect.

The phone interview was definately a unique experience, and a little intimidating because you get no feedback from the person asking the questions. However, I am glad I was able to answer 24 questions verbally, rather than writing out 24 questions for a secondary!

Good luck!

In a related item... for those of you who may be current or past Mayo students, do you know anything about how the phone interview is scored? I know the phone interview is supposed to be standardized, but I can't figure out how questions like, "What do you think about when you are alone?" can be given a standardized score. If anyone could shed a little light on this topic, I would love to hear about it!

Thanks, I noticed some people did write about the phone interview on the feedback section.. just didn't expect people would when I posted.

they're going to score this? yeah, sounds weird...
But, there was one of whether a doctor should practice what he preaches. and later they ask what you do to maintain health. so, maybe they think there is a right answer for this. (well, still not an absolute right answer).

They can see whether you do think about stuff. But, if they are going to relate that to whether you have critical thinking abilities or curiousity... well, that's just bogus in my mind.

Sometimes it's better to not try and feed them what they want (since you'll never really know what they want)... but, yeah, if anyone has an idea about the kindof stuff they want to know by asking this, let me know.
They are not always evaluating the answer (aka, the content)but, often how you answer...

just my 2 cents. I have no idea what Mayo wants
Thanks,
sonya

sonya, did you get an invitation to phone interview via email or snail mail.

Thanks

Mayo sends invites for the phone interview and onsite interview through email

yeah, e-mail.

I am not so sure if they actually "score" the phone interview, it is probably more of a screening tool to see who may be invited for the next phase the on site interview...
