Hey all. I'm entering my senior year and while I initially declared as pre-med, I changed directions after my first year but have luckily kept up on pre-reqs and what not. However, I'm probably what most would consider "behind." I already plan on taking a fifth year (or at least 2 additional semesters) but I want an idea of which areas I should focus on to bolster my experience. I'm a WA resident and it's my dream to go to UWSOM, so please keep that in mind.

As a heavy research institution, is it pretty much required that I have a certain amount of that under my belt? I currently have none, but I'm currently working in a agricultural biolab which has exposed me to a lot of connections. Would ag research suffice? If not, where should I look?

Volunteering:
50 hour project working at a hospice
Working on building lacrosse cages and gathering funds to donate sticks/gear to a local underserved community (underserved seems like a good buzzword from what I've read about UWSOM's app)
I'm thinking about building a cyclocross course and holding a fundraising race and donating to the Himalayan Cataract Project (ophthalmology is my de facto field of choice at the moment)

Any other questions let me know.

I hate to be that guy, but you should really learn how to spell your specialty of choice before telling others that you are serious about pursuing it.

I've seen lots of dumb replies, but this one takes the cake....

To OP, I have nothing to add, just felt like pointing this out. Good luck

1) I didn't mean that to be offensive or petty. If I were an ophthalmologist and received a request to shadow from a premed interested in "opthamology," then I would probably write him off as someone who hasn't done his homework, for better or for worse.

2) Feel free to add me to your ignore list if you find my replies to be unbearably vacuous 🙂.

Ha, fixed. Anyone with input beyond spell check?
