I'll be attending the University Of Rochester this fall and recently found out there is no B.S. in biology which means i'd either have to major in Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Cell & Developmental Biology, or Molecular Genetics. I have been exposed to various areas in bio but i'm thinking of majoring in something that wouldn't bring my gpa too down but also prepare me for the MCATs. any suggestions?

I loved neurobiology, and I am taking a lot of neuro classes. I am getting a B.S in biology but I can choose electives and the majority are neuro related. The major is not all that difficult, and it is fascinating. With that being said, I think your best bet is biochemistry. Biochemistry gives you solid knowledge for the MCAT, although it is a very difficult major and at some school you are required to take P chem (physical chemistry) for a biochem major. Most importantly, major in something you like. All those majors sound intriguing.

Choose the major that will train you best in memorizing tons of seemingly useless pieces of information...

I fail to see how a bible studies major would benefit her.

if i declare my major as biochemistry, how would my freshman year load look like? i'm thinking to take intro bio and intro chem along with calculus and freshman writing seminar. is that do-able?

Woah desichick, youve come to the right place.

That's all they've got for biology? No "macro" stuff like zoology or anything? General science maybe? Perhaps a degree in something else with prereqs taken as electives?

That's more than do-able - it's pretty average for a college freshman majoring in biology.

i'm pretty sure they do have those, but i'm personally not interested in those. as for general science..well then that would be going for a B.A. in biology and I think I want pursue a B.S. so yeah..pretty stumped. i don't want my gpa to be affect yet at the same time I want to be well prepared for the mcats.

Yuck....I so much prefer my B.S. in Biology and having the ability to take a large variety of classes. I would say Neuroscience or Molecular Genetics...I almost thought Cell and Developmental but I'm not so interested in Developmental Biology...

Also think about a backup plan - if medical school doesn't work out, what will you be able to do with these degrees? That was a big part of my decision in choosing a major - and the reason I transferred straight out of the Biology department at my undergrad.

Why not a BS in Brain and Cognitive Sciences? 😉 Or a BA in Bioethics? Maybe do a double major?

I vote neuroscience.. But I have a question; are you picking a science major because you think you have to? Nothing wrong with a science major if that is your interest, but please don't pick one because you feel you have to. My advice is to not decide right away. Take some classes that you find interesting and see where that leads. To me, I think picking a major without even taking any classes first is like buying a car without a test drive; it's just not smart. Maybe you will take said classes and find that your intuition was right, maybe not. But college classes are different from high school. I found I was interested in subjects I hated in high school. Just give it some thought; what's the rush?

Get a B.S and a B.A in Awesomeness. It's both a science and an art 👍

On a more serious note: do whatever will give you the easy A.

I already have a PhD in awesomeness, and trust me, it ain't easy. I also wrote my dissertation on being too cool for school. It was published in multiple journals.

Really? REALLY?

Major in whatever you think you'd enjoy the most, get the best grades in, and still have time to take your pre-reqs and squeeze in EC's.

Ya seriously, for real haha. I think the decision for major is important but I will suggest that if your good at science, Do that. The pre reqs for your AMCAS are taken care of, and you can enjoy the subject your interested in. Not to mention science majors are more prepared for the years ahead in medicine if they want to go into research or carry on with a career involving lab/bench science too.
