Hi guys,
Need some help brainstorming. I sent a formal email asking a favorite professor of mine for an LOR and we're going to meet sometime this week to discuss why I'm interest in medicine and whether or not if I know what I'm actually getting into. Below is what he actually replied back with. This is my first time asking for a letter of recommendation for medical school and I don't want to blow it. I have others coming along the line so I have to be prepared. I'm shooting to apply this year and next year just in case. I already have an idea on what to say, but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Here's what he replied with

"Hi Anonymous Student

Drop by my office hours this week. I'd be happy to write you a letter, but I need to know a little more about your motivation for the field of medicine. You realize it is not a "default" field by any means, and since the law of supply and demand is not favorable for entering this profession at present, you need to make sure you understand what is ahead of you if you decide to go down that road.

Dr. Anonymous Ochem Professor"

Question
If you were in my shoes, what would you say to this professor at the meeting?

Thank you 🙂

Give him/her exactly what they are asking for. Why do you want to go into medicine? What is/are the factors that made you decide that? Also be able to breakdown your history in as little time as possible.
I'm assuming that you have a personal statement written since you plan on applying this cycle. Print a copy of that, CV/Resume, and Transcripts. And bring the AMCAS Letter Request form so he/she knows you're ready to go. Even if they don't even look at them, at least they are there and might supply some info to fill some gaps in their letter for you.

I had a similar meeting with a person that shadowed/worked with for over 2 years. But she wanted to make sure my letter really popped. So she asked:
Why medicine?
What type of medicine are you interested in?
Is your family supporting you?
Tell me about your family?
How does your culture fit within the practice of medicine?
Do you have any interests outside of medicine?
Who influenced you the most?
What med schools are you applying to?
GPA MCAT EC's.
Do you have any special talents?
