Hi all,

I have been accepted to a few places and I have placed my deposit at my state school UMDNJ. However, I have an interview coming up which is my first choice. I am not sure as how to answer a few questions if they ask me.

If they ask me if I have been accepted somewhere and what I have done, what is the best thing to say?

Would it be wise to say that I was accepted but declined the acceptance once I got this interview. (To show them that this is the school I want to go to)

Or is it better to say that I have been accepted but I really would like to go here. (To show them that I was accepted but I came all the way here for this interview because this is actually where I want to go)

Or is the better to say that I have not been accepted anywhere and this is my first choice. (That might make them think I am not a good candidate since I did not get in anywhere)

I also have read other threads where people say its best not to lie and I don't want to lie. But then I have also read that you are not supposed to mention that you got in somewhere. So I am not sure what to do.

I am sorry if this sounds confusing but I am not sure what to do. I really would like to attend this university. I do not want to go anywhere else.

I would go with the second option...if anything it shows your interest in their school that much more considering the fact that you already have an acceptance but preferred their school enough to go out to another interview.

Definitely don't lie to them. If they ask there is no harm letting them know you have been accepted elsewhere. Be honest, express your desire to study there, and have a great interview.

I would tell the truth. There is nothing wrong with getting accepted to other schools. I think it actually shows the committee that you are a competitive applicant, and perhaps someone they should pay more attention to. I would tell them that this interview came so late in the cycle that you thought you were not being considered (not exactly that bluntly), and that you are very enthusiastic and passionate about dentistry. I would say that I would be ecstatic about fulfilling my goal of becoming a dentist and honored and privileged to be part of their school. Tell them why their school is your top choice. I am sure you have your reasons. Good luck! I hope you get accepted there!

btw what school is it?

I interviewed at Maryland on December 2nd after I had already gotten accepted to Stonybrook NYU and Columbia and I mentioned this on my interview, and my interviewer asked me why I would go to Maryland over the other schools and I was honest and straight about it and gave my reasons and a week later I was accepted. Now I have a deposit down.

If someone said that to me I'd think they were arrogant and an idiot. You got accepted and DECLINED based on a CHANCE to get in somewhere else? Wow...

In the case of hypothetical questions there may be a question of "what is the best thing to say", but in the case of factual questions there is never any doubt.

Its for meharry ...and I am not a minority....

Just curious why would you rank Meharry over UMDNJ?

I thought you were set on Stony Brook?

Like your momma said, honesty is the best policy.

fiancee is going to do a Physician Assistant program nearby so I want to go there.
to be honest with you, i would pick the best school for YOU, not your fiance. If she loves you enough she'll understand, but you want to make sure you like the school you choose to attend for the next 4 years. Find somewhere you will do well. If that happens to be near her, then fantastic, but IMHO (from what i've heard about meharry, and what i saw at UMDNJ) UMDNJ is quite a bit better

Actually, what I heard about UMDNJ... Meharry is much better! How useful are your opinions? He's a mature man, I'm sure he knows what's best for him. Best of luck and I hope you're close to your fiance and get into Meharry. Be supportive for your fellows.

Thanks a lot all for your inputs. Its greatly appreciated....Any more idea's on what to tell meharry?? So far it looks as if I should be honest and tell them I got into UMDNJ but I want to go here.

Yes, I've been accepted into UMDNJ. However, I'm extremely interested in Meharry because of X and I look forward to attending since I will have family support by my fiance, etc.

To me, if people are still interviewing when they have an acceptance, they're interested/curious in the program.

Thanksss for your quick replying and help Dr. Reo..

From the adcom perspective (or so I believe it would happen): He's accepted somewhere but here today, so therefore he must really be interested in our school, otherwise he wouldn't use his time and money to be here.

this is the clincher.
