I just started my freshman year at the University of Southern Mississippi. I am enrolled in the Biological Sciences as my major now, as they did not have Pre-Dental as a major. My ideal school for Dental School was the University of Mississippi. I was curious as to what I should shoot for as my overall GPA, DAT scores, etc., to try to get in this school. Thanks for the help!

the higher the better... aim for your best.

Why "shoot" for anything less than a 4.o?

i wish i had known when i was a freshman that the dental school application does not take into account +/- grades when it calculates your GPA. In other words a B+ only counts as a B, but an A- counts as an A. That makes a huge difference between a B+ and an A-.

It most certainly does take into account +/- grades. Two GPA's are calculated, one with and one without.

I don't understand GPA's. But look at pre-dents.com and see the schools you are looking for.

Rofl, I've never heard of someone getting a 27AA. I think the highest I've seen on these forums was a 25 or 26.

From what I've seen, the average AA on this forum is a 20-21, and I've never seen anyone on here with an AA of lower than 19. So, it seems everyone on this forum is in that top 10% in the country in terms of DAT AA score. The national average is a 17. Take that for what its worth.

"Shoot for the moon and even if you miss you'll land amongst the stars!!" Like some others say why shoot for anything less than a 4.0? That should be your goal no matter what. Even shoot for a 30 on the DAT. I've realized that in those classes when my goal was just to do above a 3.5, I ended up doing a little less, but when I actually tried my best to get a 4.0, I would get one or very close to it. So try your best for the very best. Good Luck with classes and don't forget to have fun in the meanwhile 😎

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated! 😀 I will try to shoot for that 4.0!

thats technically not possible because stars are farther out in space than the moon. i believe the saying goes "shoot for the satars and even if you miss you'll land on the clouds" which also doesnt make sense because clouds are basically just vapor and if you land on them you will probably just fall thru.

but in all seriousness, to the OP, don't do anything less then your best possible efforts. because once you put in your best, you have nothing to regret cuz you couldn't have done any better. and if you think you could have done any better, then, well...it wasn't your best the first time around now was it? 👍

A 4.9.

You're not likely to make it, but if you set the standard up for yourself that high, then it would be higher than if you shot for a 3.6

Or at least that was one of my teacher's theories.

When you do register your major, you might want to put your real major first, then maybe a ";pre-dental". Just a thought. )
