What should I undergrad?

Hi,

Im going to be a senior in highschool and I am highly considering dentistry. What undergrad degree should I recieve? I know I can do the pre-requisite courses with any degree, but I want a degree that will prepare me best for dental school.

Also, my top two schools are Miami (OH) and Vanderbilt. I know Vanderbilt has a better rep, but would I look better graduating from Miami with a higher GPA or Vandy with a lower GPA?

The English joke was because of what I'll assume was just hastiness or something.

But this isn't grammar school and we all have our sloppy moments at the keyboard. So, I say go for the sciences. They'll obviously prepare you best for dental school. An institution's reputation won't play as big of a factor as getting the grades.

People tell you to do what you are interested in and just take the pre reqs as they come. A year ago, I would have given myself the same advice. Having taken the DAT and being in the midst of applications now, I'd say hell no. Pick a major that will keep you close to the human anatomy and physiology if at all possible.

We're looking at maybe 8-10 questions max on human physio/anatomy on any given DAT. I'm not quite sure if that's reason enough to base 3-4 years of your life around something you may not be entirely interested in...

Absolutely you should major in whatever you like most.

👍 You don't have to declare a major for years. Figure out what interests you most and roll with it!

major in psychology. it's easy, and you can get all of the prereqs out of the way if you go for the B.S. Also, I had a lot of freedom to take a lot of upper div bio classes to prepare me for the DAT and dental school in general. Psych is easy.

Really? I didn't know there was an actual major/degree that is "Pre-Med."

Yes, you can major in anything that is of interest to you as long as you complete your prerequisites. I decided to major in biology because I think my knowledge of biology will benefit me when I take the DAT.

I agree. What's more important is that you do well in your undergraduate studies and prerequisites for dental school. I've heard dental schools like well-rounded individuals with something unique to offer. Most people would major in a field of science because it helps, no doubt about it. There's not right choices; do what interests you. And you might find later on that dentistry is not for you. I remember when I was in high school I found it difficult to know exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. You got plenty of time.
