Hello. I have a friend that is in a sticky situation and need some input.

She's pre-med (sophmore standing)
-Low GPA (under 2.0 with a lot of drops and F's)
-No EC yet
-She has 2 academic dishonesty on her record.
1)she took a test for someone else
2)Plagiarism (she just got dismissed from her university)

I recommended a change of career because she's struggling in her basic lower division science classes.

She's probably going to a community college and start over.....is there still a chance for pre-med. I know anything is possible, but I want to give some realistic/practical advices.

Thanks in advance.

Right now, with sophomore standing, lots of drops, and a few F's, I'd say that based on numbers alone, she has no shot, especially with 0 EC's. Starting at another school might have been a way to turn it around, come up with a compelling personal statement (i.e., I was sick, I was a stupid kid, didn't know what I wanted, etc...), put in four years of hard work at a different institution and a case MIGHT be able to be made... assuming that everything else is perfect.

When you throw in the two academic dishonesty charges (and plagiarism and cheating on tests are VERY big deals) then it's game over, in my opinion. MAYBE she could survive one, but two will any AdCom question every grade she earns, esp. cause they were very closely related to each other (plagiarims=cheating on a paper) and because they are so severe.

The two above notwithstanding, if she is having a lot of difficulty with the lower-div science courses then it is not likely that a new school will help much, esp. if she went from a 4-year school to a community college. Going from a community college to a 4-year school is hard enough when trying to get into med school.

I hate to bring bad news, but based on what you've told me about her, and assuming that there is not some very critical piece of information lacking, it looks like both MD and DO are out of the question. Sorry.

Thanks for the input. I've thrown hints and suggestions that pre-med is going to really difficult.

She seemed to be living in her little own world that even with her GPA and 2 academic dishonesty, that med school is still very reasonable. I told her she has to boooost up her GPA and that it's going to be really hard with 2 records. I think the dismissal from university gave her a reality check.

Thanks again. I just wanted to give her the right advices, and maybe from pre-med students with more experience....I'm actually a pre-dent student.

No chance whatsoever. You can tell her once, but then let it go. It's not your job to kill her dreams.

No chance at all. And she is clearly not serious about med school. I would say her primary focus is to graduate

I am a big believer that anything is "fix-able" on a med school app and that it can, with time, be turned into a positive. With that said this is definitely an exception to my personal philosophy- her ship is sunk. Things like cheating, expulsion, and criminal history (I know she only has the first two) aren't usually looked over- there are too many applicants with good stories who don't have things like that tarnishing their character. I would say she should apply to law school of business school- I know most business schools today actually look for a history of cheating and stealing! After all, we live in a country where you can get $200 million a year to run a bank straight into the groung...

Forgive me for finding that hilarious.

No need to be forgiven- I have gotten a laugh, therefore -mission accomplished!

-Low GPA (under 2.0 with a lot of drops and F's) & she took a test for someone else

I would say she has poor chances and even poorer chances for that person she took the test for...
