Hello

I am currently finishing up my sophomore year and sitting at a 3.2 GPA

I have made A's and B's in every class except
Trig C
Gen Chem II Lecture C Got a B in lab
Principles of Biology I C
Calculus I C

The Gen chem and trig were my fault, but the Biology and Calc were terrible teachers

My question is would it look better for dental schools to retake the C's at the school I'm at, Retake them at my new school when I transfer, or just not retake them?

I would retake them at the same place to show that you can manage the classes. Admissions committees will not care if the professor is excellent or terrible.

You must have mostly A's if you still have a 3.2 with 4 C's in your sophomore year. If it were me, I would not retake these courses. I would get A's in Bio 2, Organic Chemistry and Calc 2 if you take it and then continue to get A's in upper level courses. Getting an A in a repeated course isn't overly impressive to me.

However, if you lack knowledge necessary from the courses you did poorly in, you may wish to retake them from a learning stand point.

Before you make any decisions, I would try and contact a DS and get their take on your situation.

Don't retake.

I know if you retake them the C stays with an A next to it averaging out to a B

^Is this correct?^

If I average out my C's to B's it would bring my GPA up to a 3.5-3.6

Considering they are some of your core science classes, it might be worth it. Typically though, it's best not to look back and distract yourself from getting better grades down the line. I assume your GPA would also be a 3.5/3.6 if you simply get As from here on out, right?

I agree with this. Just work a little harder in the classes you know will affect your science gpa from here on out. Don't look back and let it snowball. Dental schools will overlook a few C's if your overall gpa improves and is solid.

Okay cool, so what your saying is the admissions also looks for an "improvement trend" I guess would be one way to put it.

I did not know that!

Of course they do. There isn't double jeopardy for one or two bad grades--meaning you're already penalized gpa-wise, and what's done is done. The best thing you can do is keep taking the science courses and acing them, keeping a high overall GPA and getting that sGPA up along the way. If you feel the need, you could retake 1 or 2 of your C's over the summer or something.

Useless post.

To OP,

Retaking classes are a waste of time if your only reason is to make up the grade, just take a different class and get an A. If you're looking to re-learn the subject for DAT prep reason, then by all means, retake.

Get A's and show an upward trend and turn them C's 90 degrees counterclockwise into a smile!!!! Candy, chocolate, and teddy bears for everyone!!!!

I believe your picture response should be directed to the poster who made the snide comment, not me.

Dental schools won't care whether you had good or bad professors, because it still your grade. If you say that during interviews, it will not look good on you.

Since you have received Cs in basic courses, I suggest you take higher classes and show dental schools that you still can handle harder courses.

You def. need to step up and do better in your junior year. You still have chance, so no worries.

Good luck!
