I've been on a few college interviews and they've really opened my eyes as to what I can do with my PharmD once I get it. My original plan was to do some residencies for specialties, but I think I want to do research in addition to patient care. I'm a total math nerd, so epidemiology is my field of choice. Is pharmacy to epidemiology too far of a stretch?
The usual path for epidemiology is MD/PhD though, right? What should I do after I get my PharmD? Some of my options are: residency, fellowship, PhD, academia, other grad degree. I'm willing to do more than one of them to break into research, but I'm not sure how. Any advice?

A few college interviews? Are you in high school? And you want to know what to do after you get your PharmD? Well, nothing wrong with having a plan I suppose! You could look at an MPH with a focus in epidemiology.

I've been looking into Masters in Healthcare Admin programs, but I don't know when I'll have the time in the near future. UMUC has an online program, but you're taking 6-credit courses, and a friend says they can be brutal (even when you're not also an enrolled pharmD student).

Honestly, I think a micro-brew certification is my next big goal in life. 😍

Yeah, I'm dual-enrolled at a uni right now, still in high school. Still, it's not like its a bad plan to start looking into my options. A lot of people I've talked to have mentioned an MPH as a good option. What are some pros and cons of Phd in health services research versus MPH? Any other suggestions?

The biggest con with the PhD is the time it will take to earn it. There are some one-year MPH programs out there. Some of the senior members on this board recommend tagging an MBA onto the PharmD, or the MHA I mentioned above.

I'm still looking at my options, but I'd sooner get a masters than a separate doctorate, if only for the time commitment.

I honestly couldn't give you a detailed breakdown of the differences, but a PhD is generally considered the gold standard for research. That is a ton of school though. If you're sure you want to do research in epidemiology, why even bother with the PharmD? I feel like I'm :beat: (we discussed a similar topic a bit here) but I just don't understand why people who want to get into research want a PharmD.

^That.

If you are so passionate about doing research, I am having a hard time finding out why you wanna go to pharmacy school? You should get your PhD in the area of your interest!

Dude, if you decide that's your life's calling hit me up, not even playing. :meanie:

As for the actual thread topic, I don't have a firm direction yet, but considering the fact that my undergrad degree was essentially a hybrid business/computer science program, I'm close to having the necessary prereqs to get into an MBA program... I may look at doing that, just to have options. I think an MPH would probably be preferable overall, though, given that I'm not really interested in owning a pharmacy or working up into management. We'll see.

It's a shame that life's calling doesn't often = enough money to live on.

LOL
