So I graduate December 2018 and will be applying for admission for Fall 2020 but in between my graduation and admission any recommendations on what to do? My plan was to take up a volunteer commitment that dealt with those with disabilities/less fortunate right after I graduate and continue that until admission. Also to find some sort of job starting June 2019 and work from there on out until admission. Either a job that deals with disabilities/less fortunate or a medical job. Plan to take MCAT April/May 2019 and do MCAT Practice from graduation until test day too.

Do both if possible. For your medical job, i’d look into becoming a scribe. You can maintain part-time hours for when school starts. And for volunteering with the disabled, you can pick a location to do that once a week! Hours will definitely rack up when you’re not looking! Best of luck 🙂

But what if I took up a 1 year MS degree in something like engineering during my gap year instead with some volunteering instead? Like what’s the better plan?

Why would you want to get an engineering degree? Is there a particular reason? Explaining that will be hard, as adcom will want more than “it’s a great back-up.” The purpose of taking a gap year intentionally, is to show adcoms why you’re pursuing medicine. Volunteering to help the disadvantaged and/or working in the medical field best demonstrate that. A one year engineering masters degree does not

I agree. MS would be a waste unless you have a strong interest in using it somehow later on. I'd go with a medical job such as scribing and start saving up money.

Go with a medical job that pays more than scribing though.
