Hi everyone,

so I am having a hard time to find extra curricular, which will set me apart from the applicant pool for med-school. Currently the school I attend does not allow for much outside the school. They don't have any clubs nor volunteering opportunities. The reason I applied there to begin with was because they allowed me to get straight to my science courses I need for the MCAT. Other schools I applied to required me to take pre-reqs before I can even sit in any science class. I didn't want to waste any time with that.

With that said I was wondering if you could help me with volunteering ideas, and summer experiences I should look into within my city.

start your own club
participate in a summer camp
find an after school program for kids in the inner city
shadow physicians
volunteer in a free health clinic

Don't expect opportunities to come to you.

All of the above sure sound like activities that will make you "stand out" from the applicant pool. 🙄

I think it's easy to get really caught up in the idea of standing out. Chances are if you do what you actually enjoy and also take on some med-school relevant activities (and then weave them together in your app to tell your story), you'll stand out more than if you wrestle tigers while skydiving from the international space station every other week.

thanks I am looking to apply to about 6 internships for the summer in healthcare. will build my resume up from there.

The hard truth to swallow is that nothing will set anyone apart because everything has been done. What really matters is what you do in whatever experience you have and the way you speak about it.

Join the Salvation Army That will make u stand out.

I guess honestly... what do you like to do? If you like to bike ride, get a group of people together that also likes to ride and there you go.

Most cities have odd sports such as rugby or lacrosse, etc. rather than "make you stand out" choose something that you are passionate about and love it. Can you get involved at a local high school?
