Hi,

I recently got interested in a certain speciality, however my school does not have a residency program for it and there are no doctors of that speciality in the immediate area. My school isn't far (about an hour) from a big city with medical schools that have a residency program in my speciality of interest. Should I contact that school? Or any other suggestions?

It helps, but it's not an end-all. What specialty are you thinking about? If you can tell us, we can give you more specific advice

PMR. It seems interesting, so I'd like to maybe shadow a doctor/get more info about it.

If there is anyone in that specialty in your town see if you can set up to do some shadowing even if they aren't connected to your school? Most schools give you some freedom during 4th year with electives so you might be able to set up your own elective during 4th year if you can find an attending that's willing to have you. In my experience, program directors or other faculty contacts are usually pretty approachable even if they are from other schools so shoot someone from the program an email to see about shadowing. As someone else mentioned, do at least 1 away rotation in that field during 4th year.
