I am in a very unique situation; I am currently in my intern year, i didnt match last year, but matched this year into a pgy2 spot that starts in july '07 and have an entire year free. Unfortunately, I do not have the funds to just party and travel all year. I am looking to save up some money, but i do not want to work more than 50 hours per week. From my understanding, one cannot obtain a state medical license after just 1 year of residency in order to moonlight. Also it seems, just 1 year of post grad experience doesn't get you through many doors in the pharm business. Any suggestions or has onyone been in this similar situation?

My brother in law had the same thing happen... he has played World of War craft for an entire year... I kid you not, the guy is awesome, but insane... 14 hrs a day of world of warcraft... he has sold many characters online tho for money 😉

Some states will allow you to get a full license after your internship, if you have passed step 3. Look into your state licensing. You can possibly find an urgent care clinic outside a larger city that would be willing to let you work part time. I've seen urgent care clinics that pay $50-$75/hr. If you work 1-2 days a week, you will make more money than you did working 60-80 hours as a PGY-1.

Actually most states allow you to get your full unrestricted license after internship and passing step 3. Just check your states rules. If your current state doesnt allow that then another possibility is to move to where you will resume your residency and work there if that state allows.

Urgent care clinics, ERs, doc in the boxes, nursing homes all pay between 50-85/hr.
