My story so far:
Graduated 2009 with spanish major. 2.5ogpa, 2.1sgpa (yes i know, lets just not get into this please🙁). Done prereqs there.
Informal postbac: Retook all the prereqs plus 3 upperdivision bio courses down: 3.8 sgpa 🙁
new courses being: anatomy, physiology, 2nd part out 3 of biochem, cell bio
ugpa+postbac = ogpa=2.8, bcpgpa=3.0, sgpa = 2.9 🙁🙁
will be taking biochem first part this summer and prepare for DAT
shadowing about 160 hours of GP, implantologist, orthodontist.
started getting paid as dental assistant.
My situation is bit unique I guess:
I have personal circumstances that prevents me from leaving the area where I live which is LA. No car, so I've been commuting to two different schools waking up 5:30am and get home 11pm, spending meantime at school almost everyday so I'm pretty pessimistic/exhausted about my situation b/c ive been doing this for 1.5 years.
Found out got rejected to the formal postbac program that was only the place I could have commute to . Running out of classes to take at the two schools (one is CC, yes I know bad choice.but its already done...., and the other one is ucla extension).
I guess my only option is to take classes through open university/extension and hopefully get some classes.
My questions are
1) if I can't find the class unit to fit full time, am I screwed?
2) What would you guys do if you were in my situation.

Thanks for reading.

no matter what ur situation is, many schools will take out ur application based on ur GPA. The reality is, admins do not have enough time to read all the personal essay.

I think ur best bet is to do masters. 2.8/2.9 is was too low.

There are online courses available in many universities. But considering a couple of courses won't even change the GPA significantly, I'd either do masters or start another degree. Of course, this requires a lot of time and effort. But if you think dentistry is worth it, by all means go ahead.

Well... there are good news for you.... you actually brought a 2.1 to a 2.9 (thats huge ~ "thats what she said" ~ sorry, couldn't resist)

Anyways, the upward trend is pretty big. Do your best to get your science and BCP above 3.0 mark (I know your running out of classes, but if you can do it, it would be great).

Top that upward trend with a respectable DAT, and I think you'll have a shot without a masters or formal post-bacc. Clearly, I am assuming you'll be applying next year.

to answer your questions:
1) what do you mean fulltime? you mean fulltime student? no, you have a job, its understandable that you can't be a fulltime student. 2 years of my informal post-bacc was done on a part-time basis (was working), I didn't have a problem with that.

2) well, first, I'd feel good about myself, you've been working hard and its showing (you actually fixed an irreparable GPA to sub 3.0 levels ~ thats impressive 👍) Second, if you run out of courses to take, its time to bust ur butt on the DAT (no more classes = DAT preparation time)

all the best to ya, keep us posted

Thanks for input dentalwork. Yeah after 2 more classes with A, my sgpa and bcpgpa would be 3.0. I really wanted to be in a postbac so i could take 4 science / quarter and realistically bring both sgpa and bcgpa to 3.2.
I'm concerned b/c the work is not near the full time, and im saying i might end up getting maybe only 2 classes per quarter just b/c of availability (budget cut 🙁). So yeah I meant full time student.

well... between working and doing post-bacc, its probably a good idea your part-time student (you need to find time to prepare for the DAT ~ this is the final step).

I wouldn't worry too much about it pal. 2 classes per term is fine. Normally 2 classes (or part-time) isn't a good idea if you don't have other obligations (example working). I don't believe you'll have an issue with that.

Basically, you have strong upward trend, the missing piece is now is the DAT. all the best
