hi guys!

Im in my 2nd year and right now Im taking gen Bio and O-chem. It seems I will be getting an A in ochem, but as for Bio im doing pretty badly. In both bio classes at my school, the average score on midterm is around 50% w/ 90% of the class getting around the average. Bio is pretty known at my school for having many people fail or do bad (ochem is hard too but i never thought Bio would have such a bad rep).

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I understand the lecture and the book, and I can do the problems in the book. But the midterm questions are nothing like it, non of it is straightfoward. Even our TA has said it is very tricky. I've always heard bio is memorization, but it doesn't seem like it based on midterm questions.

I do like bio lab more than chem /o-chem lab and it seems less work for me to get A in bio lab then o-chem lab (if any of this matters).

If i do bad now in gen. bio will i also do bad in upper division bio?
b/c then i think i should perhaps change my major (from bio science) to maybe chem or biochem.

Thank you for any advice 🙂

I'm not sure what school you go to, but general bio should be a breeze compared to o-chem. Perhaps try going to your professors office hours and ask what to expect on upcoming tests and the final.

sounds like bio at my school....the first exam average is usually around 50-60% because its not JUST memorization at my school. All of the exams are essay questions and really subjective.

...then again our orgo exam averages were often 50% or below as well

1. Go to office hours. Never underestimate the professor/TA liking you/ giving you good suggestions.

2. Evaluate your study habits/methods.

3. Consider a study group.

4. If all else fails consider dropping the class. Some professors just have a chip on their shoulder and seem to enjoy hurting people's GPAs.
