I recently switched from pre-med to pre-dental and have been trying to figure out some common job/volunteering activities of pre-dental students in the summer. I have applied for some research positions but I have heard that the best bet is try to find a position working around the office of a GP or specialist, even if it's not paid. What have you guys done or are planning to do over summer break?

Go well dressed and happy to private practices, and tell them youre applying to dental school and very interested in dentistry and would like the opportunity to shadow / volunteer. Shadow different dental offices, as well as specialties.

If an office likes you, they will call up practices on the spot (the ones that they send out referrals too, aka their friends) and get you shadowing in there.

Spend some time shadowing in dental clinics, and if you have more time try out a dental lab.

During the summer of my application process I was actually studying around 12 hours a day for my DAT. On my break days, I would shadow a dentist for 10 hours a day. I absolutely loved it because it kept me motivated!
