So ive been a user of student doctor for awhile, but in the pre dent forum. I searched topics for a post like this one, couldnt find any so sorry if its a repeat. If you could also link me to other helpful posts.

Anyways, I was talking with a doctor the other day and he highly suggested i try to go to med school vs dental school. I was thinking about it and thought becoming an allergist/immunologist would be very interesting and something i would like to do. Would going for medical school with the backup of dental be good? Like if i apply for medschools and dont get in, use dental as a fall back?

Currently i am a first year attending a local community college and have all my classes geared for a bio major at UCD. Having the past 2 years of thinking of dentistry changed, i have no idea what to do to go for a MD. Should i make an appointment with a counselor and re-do my ed plan? Should i start studying for mcats?? :scared:
😕😕😕What to do😕😕😕

Thanks,
Sunny

Lol, sounds a little biased. What do you think a doctor is gonna say? If you really want to be a dentist, don't let someone else dissuade you from your goal. Having a good plan to fall back on if med school doesn't work out is always good though.

A Bio major is a Bio major. The pre-reqs for dental/med schools probably aren't career specific. You said you were a freshman? If you are, now is definitely not the time to study for the MCAT since you probably haven't even learned 90% of what's on it. For now, just stay calm and focused on getting great grades.

First, besides the fact that ONE doctor said to become a MD over a dentist, what are the reasons why YOU want to become a doctor? I'm just seeing it like---if you really wanted to be a dentist, don't just change it for one person's opinion, ya know? 🙂 You are more than likely going to come across a great number of "opinions". What is most important is soul-searching--- What can YOU see YOURSELF doing, regardless of all external opinion?

If you strongly want to be an MD, I would strongly suggest meeting with a health professions advisor. Do you have any clinical experience? If not, I'd suggest looking into volunteering at a hospital/nursing home/ etc. to get clinical experience started. 🙂

If you think this is what you really want then I'd suggest meeting with a pre-med advisor about classes to take, extracurriculars to do, etc. If you are just doing this because someone told you you should, that's not a great reason. It seems like you were all set to do dental, but if medicine's always been in the back of your mind, there's nothing wrong with changing. And like Chops said, no, don't study for the MCAT yet. Just take the pre-reqs (biology, chemisty, organic, physics) and study after you finish them.

it wasnt really like just one opinion. I have always wanted to go into med-school, but thought it wasnt me, that i wasnt smart enough and i would never get it. This was in highschool where i had an overall gpa of 3.2 weighted, took 6 ap classes and never passed one ap test. So far in college, im having a great time. I really enjoy the environment and think i can really excel if i put the effort into it. The environment difference to me from highschool to college is so much in a good way. Im doing good on tests, im able to study for them, and the teaching difference involves soo much less bull ****, and im just in a CC. I cant wait to see how a UC is! With my new view on school, i really think i can excel in school and get into medical school.

If you like dentistry and medicine, you can always go into oral surgery. I'm not sure of the exact path, but it might entail dental school and then a residency in the surgical aspects.
