What to expect from an externship?

I was just wondering what exactly went on at externships. About how long do they last? Does a person have to have a certain agenda they want to accomplish ahead of time or do they just go to the school and observe? Are externships more to check out the certain program at that school or do they actually give you experience in the field you are interested in? Thanks for the help.

No..u dont take calls during your endo externship. Well, I suppose something like this may happen:

Endo resident recieves a page.

Dentist: Hello, this is Dr. Endo. I am returning a page.
Patient: Doctor, my tooth hurts.
Dentist: Ok. Come see me in the morning.

I've never heard of any endo externships, so go find some, do one, then come back here and share your experiences for all those interested in endo.

What about pedo externships? What happens? Same questions....what do we do when we go on an externship? Do we have to know what to do or have an agenda? Do we just observe or get into everything they are doing and get put on their schedule? Does it vary from program to program [looks like a rhetorical question!!]? And is it very difficult to get externships? If so, how can we convince them to let us do an extnshp at their program? Do we contact the post-doc program director or someone else??😕

No..u dont take calls during your endo externship. Well, I suppose something like this may happen:

Endo resident recieves a page.

Dentist: Hello, this is Dr. Endo. I am returning a page.
Patient: Doctor, my tooth hurts.
Dentist: Ok. Come see me in the morning.

That's funny, sounds a lot like when I take call.

ER resident:We have a patient with a broken face or an abscess the size of a watermelon.
Me:Ok. Come see me in the morning.


Seriously, that's what makes OMFS so awesome, almost nothing is a true emergency.

ME: "Is it a denture?"
ER Resident: "Ummm...a denture? I don't think..."
ME: "Go see if you can remove his 'maxilla' while I wait on the phone."

........time passes........

ER Resident: "Well whadya know...."
ME: *click*

Nurse: "Mr So-and-so's potassium came back at 6 PM and it was 3.4"

Me: "So?"

Nurse: "Just making sure you knew"
