What to include in a email for a program that has snubbed you for an interview

They already know where your hometown is based on your app.

...but that hasn't changed since you submitted the app. Why should they change their minds? Especially if you're applying to NY area itll be tough

Its only been a week and the best you could say is something along the lines of "I am still very interested in X because (1-3 good specific reasons), would the program director consider carefully looking over my application again" Then volunteer to be on the waitlist. That's what weve been told.

Emailing the programs is not a waste of time. I received interviews in the region I wanted due to personalized emails sent in October (which seems to correlate with November this cycle). The key is to be specific about each and every program you email. Make it personal, and as long as you're in the ballpark of competitiveness for the program, there is a decent chance that you'll receive a favorable response.

Oh, and don't just say that you want to be "near home." Throw in some details about the program, interest in caring for the people in your community, etc.

For what it's worth, I have heard of one IR applicant (matched and intern now) who did med school in the South, but is originally from the West Coast. Reached out to her matched program saying she was from the area, and scored an interview.

No idea about timing this cycle, but it's definitely worthwhile to reach out to your dream programs at some point, especially slightly later when people start cancelling interviews (for me, this was Nov/Dec, so I guess that would be late Nov/Dec this year?). As others have said, be specific about any experience you have with the health system or area and features of the program that draw you to them. Location isn't enough.
