So WUSTL encouraged communcation and interest stuff from us to the school. I was planning to write a letter of continued interest cause they're rolling and my interview month is behind. should i just explain what i love about the school or talk about myself or not send the letter at all? just to clarify, i havent received a decision yet

I'm surprised that they're that needy (or that they like seeing you grovel). I suggest updates, rather than a generic love letter.
Cool, I’ll wait till my paper is published. Simply being submitted/in review doesn’t mean anything right?

I understand that's how you feel about pure interest letters (and if I were an adcom, I feel like I'd agree), but if schools are literally telling applicants on interview day that they encourage them, doesn't that change things?

IIRC from my wustl interview day, I think they actually told us something along the lines of "If you enjoyed your interview day and really feel like this is a good fit for you, please let us know." I've heard similar sentiments from a number of highly ranked schools that you would think wouldn't care about such things. So while it's surprising to me too, I'm not sure it makes sense to delay while you wait for a more significant update.

If they're saying in that language to send them a love letter, then by all means, do so. I'm even more surprised now that they're that needy. This is WashU!

You should follow what schools say since they matter far far more than SDN rants on why LOIs are useless.

I think what @Goro is trying to say is that, even for needy schools that encourage grovelling, including meaningful updates that make you more attractive as a candidate is likely to have more impact than a simple begging love letter.

In the end, everyone who bothered to apply, pay the secondary fee and attend the interview has a high level of "interest," and a decision (especially at a highly ranked school like WUSTL) is unlikely to be swayed by who has the creative writing skills to write the most moving love letter to the adcom. That said, if they are openly soliciting them, you do run the risk of hurting yourself if you don't play the game.

For undergrad, I was placed on a few WLs, and while I expressed interest through portals to remain on the WLs, I didn't write any love letters because I already had several excellent choices, and wasn't super interested in begging schools where I wasn't good enough to receive an initial A when, other, equally good schools, did want me in the first go around. Not sure if it's the reason why (and, to this day, don't care 🙂), but I wasn't called off any of the WLs!!!

Somebody gets it!

I’m not above groveling...
If I thought it would help get me a II at WashU I’d get on my knees and beg like a dog for a bone.
