In dental school do most students work and live by themselves? It sounds awfully hard to keep up with school and a full time job and support yourself entirely? Or do most students live with parents?

I highly doubt most students work, if any at all. I know many students do have room mates or already come in with families. I personally have a room mate, though he's not a dental student.
Awfully hard would be an understatement, unless you're talking about undergrad and not dental school, which is still a very difficult juggling act even in the undergrad setting. If I had to guess, I would say most students factor in cost of living to what they borrow in student loans and use that to survive. Living with parents would only work if you got into a very local school, something probably much more common with competitive applicants at their state schools (e.g. Iowa, Nebraska, UW, etc).
There are of course non-trads who've saved up money. And there are also students like myself who are under the umbrella of a military scholarship which provides a stipend for cost of living.
I've heard of dental students working before. I've known one who waitressed on weekends, another worked as an assistant 3rd and 4th year and one worked as a hygienist on Saturdays. They mostly started during 3rd or 4th year when there are less or almost no classes whatsoever and just saw patients mostly.
i'd estimate ~100% of dental students have a full time job. just so happens that their job training takes around 4 years to complete and is paid out of pocket. pretty raw deal huh?
