Hello all! I graduated a few years back. I have made some decisions that lead me to heading into a new career. My question is as I progress in pre-pharmacy and beyond what would be good supplemental in addition to getting a pharm-d? I have thought economics or business administration might be something good to pursue as I am taking the pharmacy courses. Since I have taken the necessary elective courses during the first time around, I think (although I am not 100% certain) I need only to focus on the science. Ultimately I want to be a pharmacist but I do not wish to remain behind the counter without at least expanding my horizon.

Hi,

In consideration of my 2-year pre-pharmacy program, I can't imagine adding side courses to my load. If you're planning to bet a BS degree before you go to pharmacy school, I suppose you could minor in something like economics or business.

It's my understanding that pharmacy school is demanding. Again, I doubt you'd have time to go to Business School as well. I've heard of pharmacists who get an MBA after they graduate and I've pharmacists who become lawyers.

So, I guess my advice is to focus on one thing at a time unless you're some kind of super-genius. If you are - you go! 🙂

Hi!
badears,

You can do both PharmD/MBA if you have any Bachler's Degree prior to enter PharmD program, but if you do not have Bachler's Degree then you cannot do both PharmD/MBA together, you have to wait until you have finished PharmD.

Basically, I have heard from PharmD/MBA's that they had their PharmD first, then they worked Full-time and did MBA Part-time.

MBA requires any prior Bachler's Degree.

i actually thought this was the case too but we have people in our class who are doing the pharmd/mba thing who did not have a prior degree. they waited until they had so many hours of pharm school ( probably 120-150 total hours) and they were allowed to start the mba program second semester of our second year. i know it sounds weird but its true.

We also have a guy who is doing a pharmd/PA joint degree. I know there are some schools who offer pharmD/PhD. I actually looked for a program that would do a pharmd/Jd but never could find one at the time and quit looking.

You might also want to consider a residency in a particular area. In addition, most of the jobs available in pharmacy come about due to networking. If you become interested in the the corporate aspect then do a clerkship in that area and make some connections. If you are interested in law aspects, then do a clerkship with the AphA at their headquarters. There is a lot of flexibilty during the period of time you do your elective clerkships and lots of opportunity to network.

yea, some places will let u start MBA joint degree after you have accumulated 124 hours which is about equivalent to a degree.

124 hours including both Pre-Professional and Professional years?
