Okay.... I start my shadowing tomorrow at 0900 at a gen. dental office, but I have no idea what to wear. Are scrubs more appropriate? I've had some people mention a casual dress appearance...

Many of you have already started your shadowing. What was your attire?

I would wear business type clothes, such as collared shirt, tie, khaki pants etc. Don't worry about a suit or anything, but I would "dress professional". If the dentist wants you to wear scrubs I'm sure there will be some at his/her office they will let you wear. But I would go with professional dress first, and see how it goes from there!

i agree with ^^..

i always wore khakis and a polo... i wouldn't wear scrubs just b/c you're not part of the staff. you want to look profession w/out looking like you work at the office.

jb!🙂

oh yeah, NO sandals!

A tie or a polo??? I'm not sure which one to wear!!

i've always worn scrubs. when i asked the dentist and receptionist lady they usually said anything (as in business casual) was OK but scrubs also sufficed. i guess its just preference of the clinic. go ahead and call the place and see. if the office is closed by then, you can't go wrong with business casual.

I wore a suit and tie the first day, didnt know any better. Scrubs or business casual is your best bet.

I would go with scrubs...generally because if your watching a procedure I think the patients are a little more comforatable if you look like you work there, rather than just some guy in a shirt and tie watching.

It doesnt matter. just look like you are suppose to be there without looking like you work there.

if they want you to wear scrubs, they will give you a pair, but dont wear them otherwise.
one of the dentist i shadowed didnt wear scrubs so that would have been awk if i was, but another dentist i shadowed for did wear scrubs and they gave me a pair to wear.

Suit not needed, just dont give yourself a fohawk

Thanks for the advise, but ahhhh....... Black guys can't do fohawks dude!!! sry!

I wore dockers and a nice shirt (not button down but the ones with a button or two at the top... collared). Most of the time I wore a belt. Never wore dress shoes. Just sneakers.

Worked fine. As for the patients being weirded out, just have the dentist introduce you before the procedure. At the place I've been shadowing, I've had only 1 woman to date not want me viewing her. Everyone else was fine. As long as the dentist mentions that you are looking to become a dentist, the patients are generally cool with you watching.

When I ask the secretary about this - she mentioned slacks and button-up shirt. Then I ask her if I can wear scrubs - she said its okay and it's really up to me.

Off course I wore slacks and button-up shirt whenever I go shadow the dentists.

I wore Dockers and Polo button up shirt with dress shoes. When I got there my dentist handed me a lab coat. I think business casual is your best bet.

When i go into shadow at my dentist office, they want me in scrubs. But just too look a lil spiffy i wear my coach loafers.

Nice pants, button down, and shoes. No tie.

Scubs! Simple as that.

All of the dentists I've shadowed have asked me to wear business casual with a white lab coat on top.

This shirt would make a good impression. ... The patients will likely be more comfortable being around you if they know how much oral hygiene is important to you.

Leotards and a nice set of rollerskates to help you get around. What an image...

hahah I love it........

why don't u ask your dentist??? Some want you to wear scrubs, some want you to wear a white coat, some don't care... I think scrubs are the best, in case you get blood or spit on you, i would hate having it on my nice clothes and shoes....

I wore dress shirt, slacks, dress shoes and a white lab coat. It got to the point where the office staff couldn't recognize me without the lab coat.

just wear a jockstrap and a wife beater, thats wut i did and look how successful i have been 😎 oh, and dont forget to wear a nice tie with that wife beater, lol........

I would wear comfortable shoes, my dentist is a machine, I would spend about 3 hours shadowing at a time. He didn't stop working most days he would just ping-pong between rooms. I would find that my feet would kill, until I started wearing tennis shoes. I know tennis shoes and Khakis is a fashion no-no but it did help.

i wore a polo and some nicer looking jeans (not the hollister kind with all the artificial rips 😀 )

the office supplied the apron thing
goodluck!

one of dentists i shadowed with gave me a doctor outfit (just like hers except it's manly) to wear around the office. I felt pretty dam special 😀
~ wear it if it was given to you, if not, i'd stick with khakis and a polo.

just don't look like this.....
