With interviews coming around the corner I am just curious as to what is appropriate to wear to Pharmacy School interviews. I have my first official interview next September and figure that this thread would be useful for other fashion-inept males like me. There are a few older threads floating around SDN that suggest navy blue suits, but are there any other options? Are there any hairstyles that would be considered a no-no? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Get a black suit, white dress shirt, black tie, nice black shoes. It will never go out of style and always looks appropriate. Style your hair like a banker.

Its not that hard.

Guys attire is easy. Dress slacks, dress shirt, tie and and suit jacket and you are set. Keep in mind darker colors are considered more professional. Dark blue or black. I would agree with the "banker" hair style as well.

Yup, we guys have it super-easy, comparatively, for what is considered "professional". While woman may be able to "get away" with more, there is really no arguing with what is considered the standard for males. Dress shirt, dress pants, tie, and a dark jacket. For the hair, keep it short or at least nothing "extreme". Less jewelery is best.

Might I add. Clean shaven is probably a good idea. 🙂

I read in other threads that a black suit is not recommended for interview settings. Don't get me wrong though, the only suit I have is a black one and would love to use it, but did not know if other interviewees were rocking them too. I have a combover hairstyle right now and will either keep it or buzz it in the coming weeks. Thanks for the advice!

Got it. I will try to keep my bling to a minimal and bring a razor. Thanks!

Who told you this? Black suits are perfectly appropriate and aside from one or two guys I interviewed with last year, the norm. You should look professional. It's what you say, how you act and you general demeanor should be what the interviewers remember, not your "unique" attire.

A couple different sources told me that, so I was hoping others were wearing black as well. I want to avoid purchasing another costly suit if I can get away with my black suit. If only I had access to Barney Stinson's closet....

Black is way to formal. Navy blue and charcoal are the standard interview and business suits.

True. Never wear a sold black suit. You can wear a navy blue, charcoal, blackish suit, or blackish suit with light stripes. I have a charcoal suit and saw many others too.

Alright, this one is for you and the rest of you lurkers reading this:

In terms of color: charcoal or navy. Not black. Lighter grays and blues can be acceptable if the rest of the outfit is not too radical, but a med school interview is not the place to showcase your sweet new MTM outfit. There will be plenty of other opportunities to do that. Stick to the basics:

  • tailored (not necessarily expensive) dark suit
  • black or dark brown (non-square toe) dress shoes
  • socks matching your suit (avoids the 'pseudo-boot' look)
  • belt matching your shoes
  • white (or light blue) non-patterned shirt
  • tie in an inoffensive pattern and conservative color

There you go. Easy.

I don't want to get stressed out by what i'm going to wear.. as long as it's formal and neat. You are not going to wear swim suit there..are you? then you should be fine.

I wore a black suit, black belt, white shirt, dark colored tie, slip-on black dress shoes. And so did approx 80%+ of all my fellow guy interviewers at several interviews.

You're right, you don't want to stress about this little thing....you have more important fish to fry. Clean, neat, suited....good to go.

I went black suit with a dark blue shirt and a lighter blue patterned tie. I wanted to stand out from the (lame black and white) masses a bit without looking too gaudy.

I think black and white is a bit too formal and the only time I'd wear strictly those colors is to a funeral or an extremely formal event. That being said it is "safe" and you should go with whatever is going to give you the confidence to do well in your interview. It may seem somewhat odd, but I kind of feel like Superman when I put on a good suit. Find what works for you and you'll feel the same.
