I am currently a pre-med major and my cell phone contract is coming to an end. Is there a cell phone which is recommended for medical school(using applications) or is this a preference choice?

Thanks 🙂

a smartphone/PDA is recommended for rotations, but this won't come into play until 3rd year.

Epocrates, one of the major types of medical software, will work on Windows mobile, Blackberry, or Apple devices.

Any smartphone would be be good. One that uses windows mobile or an iphone would probably be the the best. Then you will be able to run apps like epocrates and lexi-comp without having to get separate PDA. These will also run on blackberry but I know lexi-comp uses your web connection to get the data rather than storing it on the phone so if you have no service in a certain area you out of luck.

My husband loves his iPhone. If I were rich I'd get one.

This is such a transparent attempt to get an iPhone/Blackberry. Unfortunately, it was a transparent attempt to my Dad when I needed a new cell too. 🙁

If you know where you're going to med school, you might want to ask around to find out which company has the best reception in the area. I have AT&T right now and there is zero service in the main med school building of where I'm going, but apparently Sprint has great service so I'll be switching to that as soon as my contract is up.

Btw, does anyone know if Sprint supports 3G/3.5G?

Yes, Sprint supports 3g...i'm posting from it right now🙂. 4g (through Clear using Wimax) is available in Portland and Atlanta, and soon Las Vegas this summer...but no phones support it yet.

Sorry but I just can see how the two issues (med school and cell phone) are related.... :O)

I carry around a phone from the 90s. It's the bomb. It's almost as big as my ego, but my ego can't be contained by a bag.

🙂

Size matters, right?

The bolded is extremely good advice. As for your question, Sprint's 3G service is actually one of the best out of the major networks, provided you're in an area with good coverage, which you've already looked into.

I actually just saw a commercial where Sprint was boasting 4G.

Like Kudu said, Sprint is rolling out its 4G network, but they use a different technology than all the other companies will be using. at&t, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Rogers (for all you Canadians) will be rolling out LTE based networks in the near future.

i.e. how you can pop corn with a cell phone

Dude, that video's like a year old. The company behind it came out and admitted that it was a viral video to sell Bluetooth headsets.

You are the first person that i've heard saying any good thing about sprint...

I'm talking about Sprint as a 3G data service provider. Whether or not their cell service matches their 3G data throughput is a different story, and again, something that each person should investigate for themselves.

Whichever one has the coolest ringtone and/or the color case you want.

Duh.

This one.

Blackberry. Period. Because they are the best 🙂

I'd go cheap the first two years and just get any regular cell phone, unless you really want the PDA functions now or the 'rents are picking up the bill.

Then when you get to 3rd year pick up a PDA/Phone.... by that time there will be many new models out from what there is now. Palm Pre will have been out for a while, maybe even a 2nd gen by that point, should be several android phones, iPhone will have gone through at least 1 or 2 further hardware revisions, etc....

My contract is up for renewal in Nov., and I plan to get an iPhone. By the NEXT time my contract expires, I'll be doing 3rd year rotations so I'll get whatever smartphone/hologram/Star Trek communicator that is currently popular/recommended.

I'm not very tech-savvy...

I don't have have a smartphone/PDA and never wished I had one. I am graduating this year, fwiw.

You can't lose with one of these babies, plus it comes with it's own hands free kit.

aha! who needs bluetooth, i'd love to try that in front of a Cop behind the wheel. "Hands free", b*aatch

OP: wait for the Palm Pre. scheduled for release sometime in June. It's new WebOS system will own the iphone.

iPhone! Everyday I wonder how I lived without one!

i'd also like to add for those cheapos out there like me that you can buy an ipod touch and get all the same medical software that you could for an iphone. the ipod touch has wireless capability and at all my school's facilities there is wireless.

take that sprint! i'm not paying $40 extra per month for data!

I wish I had one. But I realize that I'm not important enough to be on an electronic leash. Besides, I really shouldn't have 24/7 internet access. Breaks are good, I tell myself.

FWIW, though: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/07/technology/personaltech/07pogue.html
Interesting. If you have a smartphone though, you can just tether it to your laptop for the same monthly price, without having to carry around an extra device. And you get all the capabilities of a smart phone.

Only problem is that it uses up the battery on the phone.

I'd second the idea of waiting until the Palm Pre comes out before getting a new smartphone.
