What type of laptop are you getting?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I take class notes on a eeepc 900 right now and love it. I get ~3.5 hours on the battery, much better than rated. Most of the time I can plug in, so it's not a worry. Beyond the school issued behemoth I will be getting, I am going to try taking on this little puppy.

The keyboard is small, but typing isn't bad once you get used to it, even with my man hands. Besides, it provides good hand skills training!
It is so very convenient: a 2 lb computer that fits right in with my books, but I would have trouble with this being my primary computer.

I have an acer aspire one that gets like 6hrs per charge. Once you get accustomed to the keyboard it really is not a big deal. I do agree that for a primary computer it is a little small. I have a nice desktop and the acer and the combo is perfect.

i heard westernu's books will be on DVD. does anyone know if this means it will just be a whole bunch of PDF files? if so what do you guys think about getting a kindle?? and what are some benefits for a tablet? maybe i am just looking for an excuse to buy more gadgets..LOL

does anyone here know to what extent you use a school-issued laptop? do you just use it because it comes pre-loaded with software and books, or is it for some other reason? does it need to be powerful?

it annoys me that you cant buy whichever one you want and buy the software/books package to install it. i want to be able to dl some music editing programs and stuff and use my laptop for other purposes but i have a feeling the school-issued one wouldn't be able to handle anything :[

What's going on with UCLA?

I'm really surprised there isn't more of an uproar over the school-issued laptops. I mean, is there specific hardware or software that is only compatible with a dell? I can't find any information other than tech support choosing to only have to deal with one type of computer. That and the mandatory 4-year warranty and office suite software... worth more than the actual computer itself...

They should be updating the specs for c/o 2013, though, so just "keep waiting" (as they tell me).

If you want to start a petition for freedom of choice, I'm in 😎.

IMO, Mac's are just a really expensive jukebox. Aside from the sleek look and...the sleek look, I wouldn't see the need to go from a PC to a MAC. I mean, sure it's a bit cleaner interface and all but a lot of programs just aren't made for Macs. A problem I would not want to face in Dental School. Macs are just as susceptible to viruses as PC's are. The thing is, no one cares to make viruses for Mac computers because more people use PC's than Macs. Plus, with today's antivirus software available, viruses just aren't a problem for me anymore (I use AVG Free. Has worked wonders for me for a few years now). Dell has come out with some really thin notebooks now that look pretty cool to me to compete with the AirMac. Dell took it a step further and even added a CD/DVD drive to their new notebook, something the AirMac doesn't have (you need to get a USB external one). In my opinion, if you want to get a new laptop, just try both out and see what you like more. However, if you're thinking of switching between PC and Mac and vice versa while your current system has worked fine, then maybe you should re-consider switching just for the sake of switching (Mac's are a tad more expensive anyways).

Anywho, just my 2 cents.

There are a lot of useful posts in this thread with information to consider - with that being said, ^^That post is NOT one of them.

Does anybody know how important it is to meet the minimum requirements for the dental school? For UCSF the minimum specs seem a bit unnecessary (4gb ram, 14" screen)

I have a macbook w/ 1gb of ram... but it runs fine

Almost as useful as you telling me how not useful my post was.

You need 4GB of Ram at UCSF?? What kind of super note taking are you guys doing there? 😉

I've realized that a tricked out MacBook will cost the same as your basic MacBook Pro, but so much better...

MacBook 13.3 inch, 2.4 GHz, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM ($100 upgrade), 128 GB Solid State Drive ($350 upgrade), Free Printer - Total cost: $2074, vs $1999 for basic MacBook Pro

Very expensive, but hey, it'll last at least 4 years. Solid State Drives are the future! And $100 to upgrade from 2GB to 4GB Memory is definitely worth it.
