Hey i was just wondering what type of science classes count towards your BCPM. I know classes with lab like microbiology and chemistry, but what about classes like neurobiology that are definitely science but only 3 credits?

What the hell does the credit value of the course have to do with whether it factors into BCPM??

Neurobio will only count if it is given by the BIO department (not PSY, or Neuroscience).

The BCMP stands for something, after all.

Neuroscience = BCMP
Psychology = BESS

rofl
thanks for the list though
yea it seems natural that neurosci would be counted as bcmp. i think bcmp just gives a broad categorization of classes that count. different schools may break up their dept. differently.
just my $.02 though.

Neurobio will only count if it is given by the BIO department (not PSY, or Neuroscience).

The BCMP stands for something, after all.

That's not correct. They clearly state that the department is irrelevant and that it is your judgment call on whether or not 50% of the material was science or non-science.

whatever you can get past amcas will count. they may take the initiative and change some classes into bcpm classes themselves 😉

My pre-med committee at my school says that some courses which are not listed as in the bio, chem, physics or math departments can still be counted as BCMP. Our "applicant guide" tells us that we should list them based on the material, and not the department. I.e. supposedly a nutritional science class called "Physiological and Biochemical Basis of Human Nutrition" can be counted as Biology.

This is exactly what happened to me. I took a lot of Geography courses in undergrad - some I assigned to BCMP (because they were essentially Ecology) and others went into the NPSC or whatever category - I just made an honest judgement based on the course content. However, AMCAS changed one Geography course from NPSC to BCMP (I received an A in that class, so that was actually to my benefit).

Basically, make your own judgements based on course content (and the title, since I assume this is all that AMCAS will be going off of in their evaluation), and when there is a gray area, see what works best for you. 😀

It's impossible to tell what AMCAS will count as BCPM.. My major was medical laboratory science and nearly all of my classes were through that department which should be considered health sciences (medical laboratory science= medical technology)... BUT AMCAS changed half of the classed I took through that department to either chemistry or biology. i.e. Immunobiology was put as Bio and Clinical Chemistry was considered Chemistry.. though neither were your typical Chem or Bio classes because they were geared solely for medical technology... It brought my BCPM GPA up but still, I have X's on half of my classes because of it. I even called AMCAS and they couldn't give me a good explanation.

Bitter about AMCAS raising your BCPM GPA? You should be sending them flowers, not calling to complain. No ADCOM cares if there are X's. They might care about a lower GPA, though.

I listed a psych class as bio and had it accepted. It was Brain & Behavior and every chapter/test covered brain structure, function, nuerotransmitters, etc. related to particular disorders. AMCAS took it.

If the class title/content sound reasonably like it's 50% BCPM, list it as such if it can help your GPA.

So under that list which was so nice of you to provide 😀 Astronomy falls under physics. Wow does that mean I have taken physics, in a sense? I also did not know that amcas will change your stuff once you put it in.

What would you guys say about the following courses:

Survey of Forensic Science
Forensic Microscopy
Forensic Serology
Forensic Molecular Biology

They are all basically applications of chemistry/organic/biology lab work to crime.

The applicant would know a whole lot more about the class they took than AMCAS would. They don't know anything.

if you got an A in the class, then it's BCMP.👍
