Hey Guys,
What books, magazines etc should I read to help me improve my verbal score?
Thanks!
Many people recommend the
Economist magazine, because it writes on a wide variety of topics, and is also written at a high level. Upon a Google search that I did a while back, it was found that the Economist had the highest Flesch-Kincaid reading level out of all the other major examined magazines.
I would speculatively recommend you to read challenging material, books included. Examples of this would be (as I mention in another almost identical thread today)
The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, or the
Critique of Pure Reason (may be excessively difficult) by Immanuel Kant. If you vastly prefer novels, I hear
Don Quixote is very much a good book (Wikipedia lists it as the best book of all time, and it is commonly found in the top 5 on other "best books" lists). It is also on the challenging side, being at a Lexile level of about 1400 (compare:
Wealth of Nations (1500) and
Critique of Pure Reason (1500)). Of course, computer-generated reading difficulty levels have their discrepancies, for example,
Critique is much more difficult than
Wealth of Nations.
Tl;dr: the common wisdom is that if you are asking about reading in order to boost your comprehension, consider the
Economist and classic (I think better defined as classic and difficult) books.
