What was the single most annoying thing you hated about being pre-med?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I always hate hearing, "Oh you'll totally get in". Gee thanks, I knew this process would be easy!
all the unnecessary pressures and stuff you have to do to fill the checklist (18 units on top of mcat studying, clinical experiences, research just because other people can do it and balance all that stuff), how ****** and discouraging counselors are, how phony and competitive a lot of premed students are.
To be honest, this is why I wish research was not seen as a "requirement" for an application. I worked f***ing hard on my research career and I hate the fact that it could be seen as equal to someone's summer lab project where they ran PCR and gels for three months.
sometimes people have to hear that

i was in college in that show started (yea i know i'm a fcking dinosaur you children) and there was suddenly a lot more girl premeds the next semester. no lie. most didn't make it but some did
Staying true to premed stereotypes, I have to trump you- I was in college when ER premiered.

I was in college when they discovered HIV. #winning

I was in high school when DNA fingerprinting became a thing. #stilltrumping

lol I'm gonna be like 70 years old, logging onto SDN from the computer in my contact lenses, and STILL talking about eating baconshrimps.

Nope. You'll be flattend and sprawled out across the hardwood floor in my cottage's study.

Someone in my undergrad (we both transferred from the same school to the same second university) and they actually wrote about nip/tuck in their personal statement...and that was their driving force for going into medicine....they graduated with barely a 2.5 GPA and now they are in PA school.

Adding my own comment: pre-med students who realize medicine is not in the cards for them, and then start saying things like "well, PA school is just as competiive as medical school" or "Well a Physical therapist does the same things that an orthopedist does..." OMG get your head out of the clouds....you aren't a doctor and you aren't getting the same level of training as one.
I'm surprised that person got into a PA school...

annoys me when people think they can just apply to PA school on a whim, considering they have different EC requirements altogether.

Hey girl, want to study in the library? ......:naughty:
My school's main library used to have 7 basements, and from the third one down, it is freaking creepy, if you go down there at night, around 11pm you'll hear peeps banging. lol

Classmate: "So you're pre-med, you would be able to answer this...how long can you go without sleeping before you die? I didn't get any sleep the night before last and only 3 hours last night so will I be ok???"

It was a PA program at a DO school, if that clears anything up lol

My state PA program requires 2 years of working in a clinical setting. I've never understood how people can switch from MD to PA on a whim- don't other schools have similar requirements?

My friend did and she got in. Only thing they asked for more was 400 clinical or direct patient contact hours and finish Ap1, 2.

They ended up doing some gap years before doing PA school. They didn't just fail to get into medical school and then the following year start their PA program. Bachelor's Degree from a top 25 university to work as an EMT for 3 years....something you can do after you graduate high school. What a waste of money. :shakes head:

I believe most of them do...

This thread is awesome and great to see so much that I can relate to. Sucks going to a state school where there are literally thousands of premeds and it's almost a stigma...it certainly has a negative connotation. It's annoying when professors look down on you for being Pre-med as well because so many idiotic students have the "those who can't go into medicine become profs" mentality. I actually have lots of respect for Bio/chem profs...their profession and craft is totally different.

I hated when professors would try to sway me towards getting a PhD.
o.m.f.g. NO!

That was a constant question in my interviews- why not MudPhud? Or why not Phud? Or Pho? That sounds yummy right now...

That's a tough one to answer at an interview too, especially if your interviewer is a PhD.....very easy to come off as if you are disparaging scientific research. I don't care. I realize it's important for advancing medicine and the field and society....but I want to work with patients...not the same 5 people in a small space day in and day out, making calculations and measuring protein lysates and RNA yields. gtfo

The single most irritating thing I hate about being premed is hearing all the idiotic "premed" girls when asked about their major they say " I'm (insert name) and I'm a biology major with a premed concentration and I want an A!" There is about 4 of those that sit in my bio 2 lecture that make it ridiculously hard to pay attention because all they do is freaking talk and giggle!! We were taking notes on the reproductive system and every time the word impregnate, sperm, clitoris, labia, or penis was used all I would hear over the professors is this fat girl say "Huhuhuhuh penis" then all 4 of them would just giggle! I mean how freaking old are you? Jesus!

For me, it was simple- no point in getting a MD/PhD if I want to be a clinician first and researcher second. I have no desire to write grant applications for a living.

lmao, seems like you don't like people.

Would it matter if she were slender?

Definitely call them out on their childish behavior and nip it in the bud. They'll be the first disrespecting ones to poke the penis on the cadavers.

Yes but I could see a PhD grill you for this - "Why, don't you think it's important to conduct research? You clearly have a good deal of research experience - you could probaby fast track your PhD, or get more experience writing grants." Idk, I have no faith in these people - alot of them wear their heart on their sleeve and if you don't think their work is pivotal you're a jerk.

True, and I answer this way: I have no plans on quitting research, I'm just honing my focus from translational research to clinical. There are many brilliant minds who would love to spend their days making a remarkable bench discovery and I hope to work alongside them, helping to discover answers to the problems my patients encounter. I have written enough grants- I need no more practice in that arena. Just as a PhD couldn't see themselves as a clinician, I cannot see myself as a PhD.

lol yeah...but honestly I can't blame them for being irritated with us....they're probably so tired of every Tom or Dick saying they're pre-med, bumping grades, LOR, lab inquiries, etc.

I'm just ready to be done with intro courses like Bio II...weeds out hundreds at my school. I'd much rather be in a classroom full of people that really know what it means and want it.

I had English profs try and persuade me into doing an English Literature PhD.

Nope nope nope

I don't hate all people, just those people lol

lol and it wouldn't matter, I just got caught up in the post!

Nope nope nope
Lol my math professor would always crack jokes about people who major in English are always in the unemployment line. He comes from an engineering background.

I don't think I'm headed for the unemployment line anytime soon lol. Engineers like to hate pretty hard on other majors. Mostly for good reason.

Funny, I always heard that it was philosophy majors who would think deep thoughts about being unemployed.

People who incessantly ask for advice on how to be well-prepared for the MCAT, craft a great personal statement, what schools to apply to, etc... and then completely ignore the advice and do the exact opposite. It's like watching a plane meet a mountain in slow motion.

I would say being surrounded by whinny premeds who are for the most part clueless, yet they think they know their ****. Maybe I'm bias here because I hate arrogant people who don't know what they're talking about.
Also the process of actually applying, the anxiety of waiting that we go through is annoying....

How about arrogant people who do know what they're talking about?
