HELLO!

What was your undergrad major? I saw a few posts like this in the pre-dental section, but I would like to hear from the VETERANS! To what extend does your major matter to these dental schools?

Thanks in advance for taking time out to reply 🙂

Economics Major: will be attending Temple Dental this summer..sry just realized you posted this for current dental students.haha

Biochem, didnt matter to school though , they only care about gpa

music - major doesn't matter

Biology. Major "doesn't matter" to the admissions committees, and they will tell you as much. It might matter to you as a student, though.

The fact that I took (and studied very hard for) an intensive Molecular Cell Biology course, a graduate-level Biochemistry course, and some animal Physiology prior to entrance meant that i had to study considerably less than some of my classmates for Biochem or Cell Bio in first semester.

Conversely, the fact that some of my classmates took graduate-level Neuroscience means that they are sitting pretty this semester, while I struggle to figure out why I should care about the histology of different nerve cells, and try to sort out the differences between astrocytes and ependyma.

Obviously dental school is perfectly doable as a non-science major, but taking these classes might make your life in dental school a little easier, while making your undergraduate life a little harder. But I'd rather have a little more time in dental school (where some days, the timing comes down to whether or not I should shower 😛) than even more time in undergrad (where not having Friday completely off was considered a hardship).

History with minors in chem, bio, and German

exercise science undergrad
animal physiology grad

I majored in biochem. Schools don't really care what you major in as long as you take prereqs and upper level science courses. If I could do it again, I would go back and get a finance degree and take prereqs.

Major in something you enjoy and something that has some use to it in the real world.

I want to thank you all so much for your posts 😍! Im thinking about changing my major back to psychology with a minor in biology or business...

Sorry it took me so long to reply! It took me FOREVER to find my post! Lol

Music major, Dance Minor for 1 year, and graduated with Computer Science degree... Hated my programmer job, went back to school, dental school.

East Asian Studies Major with Minors in Art History and Psychology. Got into Dental school this cycle, starting in August.

Just curious if its just my school, but you all who didn't major in a science didn't have a hard time taking sciences, as far as registering goes? At my school (U of Cent. Fla.), the pre req for bio I is that it must be required by your major. Seems weird to me seeing that its not like we're a tiny school or something (3rd biggest in country). I'm gonna meet with an adviser Wednesday and see what the deal is. I'd sort of like to keep my accounting major and take the pre reqs (although this may be too hard with all the sciences) so I'm gonna ask if I can get around it somehow.

Business Management with a concentration in Human Resource Management, took the dental courses on the side.

This wasn't a problem at my undergrad (University of Iowa)- hope you get it worked out!

Music Major 😀 My interviewers loved this too... thats all we talked about 😎

Major - Microbiology
Minor- General Business

The general business minor was sufficient for me to have a solid foundation in business activities, without going into specifics. I would say many dental schools would look favorably upon some form of business education considering it is a large responsibility as a general dentist, specialist, etc.
