What will the future be like for Pharmacists?

I have always been so scared about this. What if they create some robots that can do everything the pharmacist can do??
Well, thats unlikely.

But what if we have too many druggists in 20 years and then they cut back salaries? Because it seems like pharmacy is such a hot career to pursue we might have to many in the future. And with those robots doing alot of the work, we might need less pharmacists from that too.

I am just scared about those types of things.

I am an undergrad trying to perform well in college so I can get into Pharm school someday. I am working as a pharmacy clerk and I want to be a pharmacist someday and I know it will take me a long time, so I am scared it wont be such a hot career by the time I finish school.

I think they will always need some kinda professional about drugs even with all these new robots. That will just limit opportunities for clerks and techs probably, I hope.

Do you think Pharmacy will always be a hot "in demand" job with high salaries? Do you think that new kinds of jobs will open up for Pharmacists in the future and it will get even sweeter? or not?

Now....stop worrying for one weekend! Go help your mom clean the house or cook the yams or......watch......football!

Each time you think about wanting to worry if you'll be needed in 5 or 10 years...while you are sitting down to dinner today or having to help clean it up....there is at least 1 or 2 pharmacists on every shift in a hospital working. There is also a 24 hr pharmacy staff around your town...you may not know it, but its there.

Unfortunately...some folks have heart attacks, some kids get hit by a car, or a dad falls off a roof trying to get the Christmas lights up. They'll each need something & a robot won't take over for me - just another colleague - YOU perhaps will.

So....go have a nice Thanksgiving & relax!!!! Enjoy!!!!

This may not be the norm, but in my pharmacy I spend at least as much time fixing the piece of **** robot as I would have filling prescriptions. Maybe robot repair is the field to be in? 🙂

I think that pharmacists have to make crucial clinical judgments and decisions that robots can't do (think about a hospital setting where each patient is unique with their own various disease states)... People can read a chart and regurgitate the information, but can they make a specific recommendation derived from that? I think pharmacists' jobs are difficult (especially if they want to make the best decision possible.. but who can say what's "the best"?)!

Here is my $.02 as a nonpharmacist lurker who earns my paycheck automating processes:

Pay is supply and demand related in a free market economy… (except when it comes to unions… like the AMA ) so it may make less in the future relative to other professions as the market is flooded with people like me who see $ signs… but it will always be a well paying profession.

Regarding being replaced by a robot, the repetitive tasks will and should be replaced with automation in the future as healthcare experiences pressure to reduce costs (about time!)… but if you get paid to do any work that requires intellectual creativity you are safe (for the near future😛 )…
