What will you do to celebrate being accepted?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good for you. I take it that you're under 25 and male? Enjoy those exorbitant insurance premiums and filling up with premium gasoline. Don't forget that sports cars are finicky and they end up in the shop more frequently than a regular car.

My advice: don't end up living paycheck to paycheck and aim for a debt-free lifestyle. You haven't earned anything until you become an attending.

You sound like a hater.

I doubt he'll ever be living paycheck to paycheck when the parents are getting him a C6 now. I have a BMW it's hardly ever in the shop.

You should try Costco brand (Kirkland) bourbon. I'm a Maker's and JD Single Barrel guy too, but the Kirkland bourbon is still very good. Plus it's $20 per liter.

I looked into it and it sounds like Jim Beam makes it. I don't live near a Costco, but if I ever pass one I'll stop and pick up a bottle. Thumbs up on JD; you have a solid taste in adult beverages, sir.

To be honest, I don't know his situation. His dad could be an exec at a F500 company making millions, or he could [more likely] be making 50-100k/yr and would purchase the Corvette through dealership financing. At the end of the day, you pay more in interest than what's necessary.

I'm not applying until next cycle, but...

I expect I'll reread the acceptance a dozen times, then a few more to make sure its real. I'll probably tear up a little, then sleep a lot, then knock off as many non-medical school related objectives from my bucket list as possible before school starts.

For realsies this time, I will probably go have sushi & sake with a friend or two.

I've also been telling myself that I am buying myself an iPad when I get in, but I won't actually have the money to do that until med school financial aid comes in.

I'll keep the self-congratulatory prizes coming throughout the cycle....

Acceptance to any school throughout cycle: I'll go to Applebee's and celebrate with a tall glass of guinness and half-priced appetizers. (/ball hard)

Acceptance to any school "of major interest" throughout cycle: I'll pick up some game tickets to my fav NFL team.

Acceptance to any of my "dream schools" throughout cycle: I'll go on impromptu roadtrip to dream school's city w/ fiance to explore and get better feel of city/things.

Seriously? That's a solid way to say, "Thanks for helping me achieve this incredible dream"-- buy them bottles of red zin?

absolutely- when I applied to grad school I sent all of my letter writers a really nice red wine, carefully selected from my favorite wine shop. maybe that's how you know they're the perfect letter writer- when you've shared enough wine with them to know their preferences.

seriously though, a nice bottle of wine is always useful, and if they don't drink they can bring it to/serve it at a party

get them something that can be consumed so they don't look at it and go "no where the heck do I put this?"
starbucks gift cards are also popular - or a gift certificate to a favorite lunch place

The Applebee's on Olentangy and Ackerman?

And good thinking on gifts for LOR writers. I made them baked goods when interviews started rolling in (hello, macarons!), but completely forgot about the endpoint. Should be fun brainstorming when I hopefully get to that point!

This is really good. Thank you so much! I was thinking these people are major reasons I get into medical school (if I do, indeed, get accepted)--how can I show some major love?

What's a reasonable (read: not annoyingly effusive) amount for a gift card if they don't drink? $50-$100? Same amount for a bottle of vino if they do? $100 bottle?

Thanks again!

This is a very good idea. I never considered sending in treats as the LOR's arrived. Thanks for sharing!

I think $100 may be pushing it, but to each their own. I'd definitely be open to spending that much if I can budget around it - I really appreciate the role a good LOR plays in the process.
