What will you do with YOUR DVM?

I want to do SA exclusive and hopefully 5-7 years out of school I would like to buy a practice or build one.

I haven't even applied yet, but I've known what I've wanted to do with my DVM for a few years now. I hope to participate in the EIS after graduation, do my 2 years, then get a job with the CDC. I want to do disease outbreak investigation and study infectious zoonotic diseases. I love, love, love epidemiology. 😍

Changes with the day of the week.

I am interested in equine orthopedics/lameness, feline specialty work, dairy herd management, finishing my MBA post DVM to do some sort of business/vet related something.

Right now I think I probably want to go into SA GP, and maybe eventually go back for a PhD and go into academia. I'm sure that will probably change about 7 times when I get to vet school and get exposure to more areas, though.

I'd like to do the DVM/MPH program and work for the government in infectious disease surveillance/epidemiology or work at a state diagnostic laboratory. I would really really love to be a US Fish & Wildlife Service vet or NPS vet. I'm sure I will change my mind several times while in school. the opportunities are endless!

One of the things I love about vet med is the variety 🙂

I'm 95% sure I'll end up in small animal general practice. It's where the majority of my experience is and I love it! It's the area that got me interested in the profession. Although I do love the ponies so I'm hoping to get some experience at an equine practice this summer to see if it's for me. I wouldn't mind doing a bit of mixed (although no cows or piggies for this girl...😛) but it's most likely going to be SA gp. Although the business side does make me a bit nervous, I would eventually like to end up owning my own clinc or being a co-owner. I'm not set on that part though.

Of course, I'd like to spice it up with forays (paid or volunteer) into other areas like shelter, international, therio, teaching, etc. I don't want to do any more schooling than I need to so any specialties are out.

Right now, I'm very strongly considering specializing in emergency/critical care. I also want to volunteer my time in shelter med and do some behavior on the side. Something I also really want to get involved in is emergency response. Eventually, I'll probably end up in academia or at a large referral hospital where they do some teaching. I love teaching 🙂

I'm impressed by the number of people who have things they want to do "on the side." How will you have time for on the side stuff? On the side, I'd like a nice husband, some kids, and maybe a horse or two. 😀

Lol. I intend to get paid for my behavior work. 🙂

SA medicine for me. Of course I wanna get through Vet school first. But depending on where life is once I get out, I'd like to do a residency and become a boarded specialist. I could see myself doing Surgery, internal medicine or ER/CC. So who knows! I may even change my mind completely once I'm in school so I'm open to where life takes me 😀

I assumed. Still 40+ hours a week ER/Critical Care doesn't leave much time to get paid for behavior work. Aside from volunteer gigs the only vets I've seen successfully work "on the side" jobs were rarely full time at their main gig, and the one I can think of who was had a weekday off built into her schedule so she could do her on the side stuff.

Not to sound rude, but if my animal needed a veterinary behaviorist, I'd take it to someone who does that full-time.

Absolutely. No offense taken. I was thinking more of issues that don't necessarily need a vet behaviorist but would do well with some guidance. But, point taken 🙂

Nearly through my first year and I still want to be a veterinary epidemiologist. If that doesn't pan out, I think my Plan B is to work at a large clinic as the doctor who deals with exotics. 😉 Especially birds and reptiles. Them's my favorites. 😀

Definitely leaning towards Small Animal GP, since that is what the vast majority of my experience is in and I just cannot see myself being happy doing Large Animal or anything else. Definitely keeping an open mind, possibly considering emergency care but we'll see how vet school goes.

Gotcha.
