Do you think, in all of our wisdom, that one day we could all march on capital hill and cry foul against VSP, for providing such poor reimbursements and getting away with it. I swear it s like highway robbery. My attending just showed me how they operate and it's sickening. Granted this is one case, but its very disheartening to see reality. He showed me a case where the charges for the patient was $1000 total. VSP reimbursed the doctor 600 but then made the OD pay $250 in lab fees, and the patient paid $301 for glasses leaving a grand total of $49 for VSP to pay. $350 for a $1,000 service. total bull****.
I know there are anti-trust laws that prevent optometrists from mobilizing large groups of ODs against a single cause, but someone needs to end this madness. Btw, why isn't there an anti rip off law (that VSP is doing on a daily basis)? O.D.s need to put their foot down. You don't see this type of mistreatment in other professions. If enough people cared, I bet we could make a positive change. 😎

VSP isn't the worst vision plan, jsut the biggest.

The only thing that works is to have enough OD's not accept the plan, making it impossible for them to market in areas where they have no providers.

The problem is that the oversupply of OD's finds so many of us desperate to get warm bodies in our chairs and the abundance of corporate-controlled practices that accept every plan to increase their volume.

The opening of more unneeded schools will only make this problem worse.

VSP does not require anyone to sign up to take them. If your attending doesn't feel he's being properly compensated, he should drop VSP.

totally agree...if no one signed up for the plan..it would die out as its patients wouldnt be able to see anyone.

VSP is probably one of the better "vision plans." Look at the reimbursements from Eyemed or Davis vision and you'll find they are just as bad. Also you will find that Vision care patients want everything despite what little their plan actually covers.

A lot of my P.I.T.A patients went out of the door when I dropped Davis vision.

I had to see three Davis/Eyemed/Superior vision patients to make the same amount of $$$ as a Private pay patient.

I can spend more time with people and see fewer patients now.

What is the average reimbursement for VSP, EyeMed, and Davis Vision.. or does it depend from state to state?

For exams?

VSP is $63 here. Eyemed 40-60. Davis 60ish. Spectera (Optum Vision) $65, I think.

VSP $65 quote from a PP doc near me
Eyemed $40-$50 in my area
Davis Vision $48-$60
Spectera (Optum Vision) $45-$65
Superior Vision $52 - $3 "Administrative Processing Fee" a.k.a BS fee = $49.00

These are quotes in south central Kansas.

So are you basically guaranteed these fees if you see a patient, or is there some copay involved?
