Hello SDN,

My sister is going to optometry school next year, and my aunt and uncle are both optometrists as well.

I personally have become really interested in the more surgical and complex eye disorders so have started entertaining the idea of shadowing an ophthalmologist and looking into the field.

Anyway, what kind of dynamic do you guys think would come out of being an ophthalmologist with so many close family members in optometry?

Thanks for your thoughts!

You'd obviously be their superior and have way more authority than them in all aspects of life. Unless of course you became a DO Optho, then you would be worthless because only MDs matter.

More specifically, I was wondering how closely the two different eye care specialties work together, or how much competition there is between them. I thought somebody on this forum might have some insights since the results of my Google searches have thus far proved pretty fruitless.
I am hoping for some non-troll answers 🙂

Let the countdown until Shnurek arrives begin.

I am going to back you away from the OD vs Optho question for a moment.

If you were unable to be an Optho, would you still want to pursue an MD/DO? Would you be happier as a family medicine physician/Internist/Pediatrician/Psychiatrist than you would as an OD? If not, don't pursue MD/DO, go OD. Your chances of getting into optho are very slim and impossible to predict when you haven't even applied to med school yet, so don't commit to becoming a physician if you would only want to do one, very competitive specialty.
